Exciting news for anyone interested in mobile TV: Virgin Mobile has unveiled its service, which launches on 1st October, initially allowing users to watch BBC1, ITV1, Channel 4 and E4 on their phones. The service and handset will be free if you sign up to a monthly contract worth £25 or more, while prepay users will have to pay £199 for the phone and then £5 a month for the TV service.
Virgin’s mobile TV is different from the other operators, because it’s not streaming over the mobile network. Instead, it receives broadcasts using the same DAB technology as digital radio here in the UK. Virgin has even signed up Pamela Anderson for the advertising campaign. Hopefully this doesn’t mean endless Baywatch repeats on the ITV channel though.
The service will also offer 50 digital radio channels, and a seven-day electronic programme guide to show what’s on.
