Nokia N-Series charger problems

Sorry to go off on a personal tangent. But hey, it’s a blog, I’m allowed. Is there some kind of a problem with Nokia’s new Nseries chargers? Well, the one that comes with the N70 at any rate, which has a smaller nozzle than all previous Nokia chargers.

Mine broke about four months ago, so I got a replacement, and now that’s broken too. In exactly the same way – it won’t charge the phone, and the little nozzle feels a bit loose, like it may have snapped inside. Surely that can’t be the case twice… Has anyone else encountered this problem?

You’re not the only one, Stuart - the charger’s given up the ghost on my N70, too! Always thought it looked a little flimsy, especially compared to the nice chunky sockets/plugs you get on all the other Nokia handsets…

  2. 2 Milhous

Yep - i’ve been through 3! Each time the exposed metal ‘pin’ gets bent, comes loose and eventually falls out.

  3. 3 Harn

The chargers are terrible, mine will only work if I perservere by wiggling it around but then its really temperamental. The N70 does come with an adapter for the old style chargers so I’ve started using that and it seems to work fine :)

  4. 4 chris

I have been through three chargers and they have all failed in the same way. The only way it works is if I wiggle it around and even then it’s temperamental.

  5. 5 Sarah

I have bought 3 land chargers and 3 in-car chargers in the past six months and none of them now work.
I’m tempted to buy myself a Samsung….I love my phone but I’ve spent over £100 on chargers!!

  6. 6 Nitin

Yeah!!!! I am facing the same problem….my nokia n70 charger is very dodgy.. intially i thought something wrong with phone..now after listening to u all..I am sure its a charger.

  7. 7 Ayaz

its not just the N70 its the full Nokia N-series

  8. 8 Derek

Agreed I’ve had my N70 less then a year and I’m on my third handset and my forth charger which has given up the ghost already. What a pile!!!

i have a nokia 6233 and i took my charger in on january 15th and i still not had one exchanged 9 weeks later as there is a problam getting them in. bla bla bla…….

  10. 10 Jay

Ok if you have bought your charger from a retailer and it had broken then you can get a new one has long has you have the recip. The new nokia chargers are all the same i work in a phone shop so i knwo the basic details about it. If you do want to get a new phone get one of following:
    1:Nokia 6300
    2:Sony Ericsson K800i
    3:Samsung D900
    4:Samsung Z400(My personal 3g handset)
    5:Sony Ericsson K610i
Those are my personal favourties Notice their are more Sony Ericsson and even an old Sony Ericsson phone that been out for about 7Months. The Samsung Z400 is basically a D900 but it doesnt have the 3Meg cam or the slimness. But it does have a 3G camera and its very easy to use teh phone alot more easier then the D900.

after 14 weeks of refusing to by a replacement charger i now have. The shop is having to replace them with stock of the shelf and will be taking up with the problem with nokia them selfs. never had a problem with nokia, unlike some other make that i wont mention but it looks like nokia has messed up big style hear. good job i had old nokia spare.

  13. 13 Banter

I agree, Nokia’s 6233 charging system is so faulty! I buy new charger adapter (from old good nokia chargers to new little one) every 2 moths! Why they had changed the charger socket size?!

  14. 14 sarah

i have had TWO that have both just stopped working. the first one the pin fell out and the second was just crap.
I REFUSE TO PAY for a new one, why should I it is faulty?
I went to the orange shop and the lady just handed me a new one. the guy in there was VERY rude so i just refused ti talk to him. he said that he wouldnt swap it without a receipt and even then only within 28 days, well i wont stand for this. everyone knows that the basic rules for uk retail is

FAULTY GOOD DO NOT NEED A RECIEPT

end of story. stick to your guns, ask to speak to the manager, tell them that other people have been given replacement new ones free of charge, but dont part with your money. they are bloody thieves phone shops

The Nokia 6233 is one word “Rubbish”. I purchased the phone in November 06 and in March 07 it decided that it wanted to wind me up and not charge. Can I just say thanks to Nokia for making the charger hole smaller because it makes it work better and it makes me think the phone looks better and feel sexier (”NOT”)! (Why did they do that? Should have kept to the original size! The old Nokia’s are greeeeeat! Pitty about the new ones!)

  16. 16 Tapiwa

Thats true I didn`t see the reason for nokia to change their chargers the old big ones were better and stronger I have a nokia n80 that I boyght a mont ago and the charger just stopped working this is rubbish seeing as I purchased the phone for 400 pounds bun the new nokia charger .

  17. 17 Matthew

WHY DID NOKIA CHANGE THE DESIGN OF THEIR CHARGER? If you have the answer please leave a message below. THANK YOU

  18. 18 Perry Mensah

I own Nokia N90, Recently my charger stop working. I bought the nokia USB charger. it worked for about a week and it also stopped working. I have bought a new nokia charger and nothing seems to work. i have tried different once but still not working.

I have a funny feeling its has developed an internal problem. unfortunately i bought the phone at Spain so i cant get any support from Nokia.

I still feel these problems were cause by Nokias new charger. I can only charge my phone by switching it off and charging the battery separately with a Universal Battery Charger. Which is so uncomfortable. Any body have some suggestions ?

  19. 19 LODHI

what the hell is this phone???? trying to charge it since last nite with the original charger, once i felt like beating it with hammer. guys is there any soloution to get rid of this problem???

    Thanx,

  20. 20 Rizwan Nadeem

Hey guys, Ive had the same problem with my N80, and N95, I’ve been through 5 chargers in the past year with my N80, and all of them seem to stop working. They only work when I fiddle around with them. I havent got a clue of why this happens with all the chargers, maybe because there so small at the point at which the charger connects to the phone….
    Anyone got any real solutions…?

  21. 21 Mark

Sorry to be another one but my N95 stopped charging after 1 day!!!!!!!! Lets hope the replacement lasts longer.

  22. 22 steg

On my second n70 charger, Have spoke to orange they reckon it could be a fault inside the phone, there all Rank!. The best solution is to get rid.

  23. 23 Sarah

I ended up going through 2 chargers for my N70…I ended up getting round it by putting my battery into my mum’s older nokia phone and then charging it and swapping them back…gets annoying after a while though. Then, I thought my problems would be over, or at least postponed a couple of months when I got a new N73 yesterday. Alas, less than 24 hours after I got it, and on it’s FIRST charge (!) I’m having to wiggle it around, a worrying symptom! There are the odd few that are ok, I sometimes used to charge it using my sister’s new style charger and never had a problem with it. She’s sold her phone now though :(
NOKIA must be making a FORTUNE out of us!

  24. 24 Jess

I have a nokia 8600 Luna and looking for someone to give me information on the phone. People say that this phone is not out but somehow i got a hold of one. Also my friend has another one. PLease i need help

  25. 25 Caspar Field

    Hi Jess,

We have loads of posts with info about the 8600. Just click here to read them. The reason you’ve been able to get one is because Carphone Warehouse bought up all the UK stock of the 8600 so that it could sell it as an ‘exclusive’.

So… Can you help us out? How much memory does your phone have in it? Nokia forgot to put it on the press release!

  26. 26 m-c

did anyone contacted nokia regarding this?

i have the same problem with my n80 - i am an extremly dissapointed customer, as we are all, and Nokia should do something about it.

Please send them emails about it from Nokia.com, here is mine,

    m-c

    Hello,

i own a n80, and as many other consumers the charger is constantly stopping charging. Most of us have bought 2 or 3 chargers for the same phone, will you do something about it?

Please have a look at this website to hear about your consumers, complaining about the chargers of the n serie :
    http://www.pocketpicks.co.uk/latest/index.php/2006/09/18/nokia-n-series-charger-problems/

Can you send me a new phone or a new charger since the one i paid for, and the new charger i just bought, are not working?

    your name

  27. 27 neil

Did anyone get an error message that said ” charger not supported”?

  28. 28 carlos

on the 2 nd day since getting my n90 the charger screwed up, brought another one and whithin a week it SCREWED UP, after useing my old nokia to charge my battery for a few month i brought another charger for my n90, and guess wat, it SCREWED UP AGAIN the very day i got it, took it back the next day and got another one after testing it at vodafone to see if the damn thing works, it did work and so brought it, well guess wat, the next day it also SCREWED UP, i got soooo pissed off that i threw the damn thing across the room onto the wall it rebounded and smashed right into my laptop causeing a big crack on the monitor, gave the fone to my cousin, now ive got an n73 and to my shock it has exactly the same evil charger, and after working fine for a few weeks though haveing to wriggle it around to get it charged it also has now given up up, after reading this forum every latest nokia fone had it chargers cock up, and since a new nokia charger cost anything up to £ 30 quid and since 100s of thousands of these fones been sold then nokia has obviuosly made a heck of a lot money from these chargers alone, it obvious they were designed to SCREW UP.

  29. 29 Pat

We have alays used Nokia Phones. It was always handy having spare chargers at home and work. Nokia seen the potential for income with less robust chargers.
But its gonna backfire on them big time..

  30. 30 WEEMAN

I have had exactly the same problem….if you go on Amazon though you can buy chargers that arent made by Nokia. I have one and i have had it now for 6 months and it still works perfectly. I have a question for everyone…N70s are ment to have 240hrs or standby time and even when i dont touch my N70 it runs out of battery after just 2 days! Is this normal or do i have a problem with it?

  31. 31 doctor darts

These N Series phones are rubbish, chargers packed in X 2, now the phone wont recognise a charger at all!!!!!!

Its my last Nokia, thats for sure

  32. 32 Greg

Same problem for my N93. only works when it wants to. My brother’s had the same issue and is going mad… NOKIA should organize a recall provide people with old charger with adapter. that might last longer.

THERE WAS NO NEED TO CHANGE THE DESIGN OF THE CHARGER.

  33. 33 Vishal

    Hi,
I am also one of you. Had bought Nokia N73 six months back the charger stopped working after 3 months.

  34. 34 simo

i bought a nokia n 70 yesterday…and i was very scared when i tryied to charge it because nothing happpned…and i thought it was because of the phone…and now i see it’s a charger problem…it does scare me though the thought that it might never work and that i have to open the phone, transfer the battery into my nokia 2600 and then charge it :( i was hoping for a more sofisticated and problem-free phone :( and i don’t really know why did they change the charger..the nokia 2600 charger was very ok…it never failed….and it wasn’t so huge either :)) well …seeing it’s not only mine that doesn’t work i’m a little releafed(in a weird kind of way) take care yall…and hope this problem will be solved…once and for all

  35. 35 Laurie

Oh man, Im so glad to hear Im not the only one with Nokia charger problems!! Mine’s even worse…the plug in thing (NOT the prongs for the wall socket - the small one for the cell phone) CAME OFF. Like, the actual thing broke off as I was taking my charger out, and the thing is, the metal is actually stuck INSIDE my phone, and the wire of the charger is completely exposed.

I am not impressed with Nokia. My first phone was a Nokia and I didnt like it, but the dumb me thought “hey, just give Nokia another chance”. I do love my phone (6265i), but the charger is just ridiculous.

  36. 36 sunny m.y.s

fukin bullshit nokia n series sucks cock…ive bort 7 chargers they all broken the cheap bastards!!!

  37. 37 Kirsty

    Hi all,

I have a Nokia 6111 and my dad has an N70, both our chargers are soooo tempremental and I get so frustrated when I try to charge my phone, I have to wiggle it and even then it just stops. im thinking of buying the adapter that goes from the old type charger to the new tiny pin one, does anybody know if this works better atall?

I think nokia need to know about this, its obviously driving us all mad!!

    Thanks

  38. 38 louise

i have gone through for, iv had my n95 a few week n the charger has gone on that 2, iv bought adapters before for the old style n that doesnt work either!!!

  39. 39 mafiotu48

I have the same problem with my n73 me charger. It does not charge my phone, and it’s a problem near the charger. I took it to nokia service but i don’t have much hope. I have 2 friends with n93 that have the same problem.

I’ve been a fan of Nokia all my life, and have only owned a non-nokia phone once (Ericson T28), but since always used Nokia for their interface and their simple one-type chargers.

The N-Series are the biggest mistake ever to have taken place in Nokias history. They are simply a bunch of wannabe phones. Phones which have had every function rammed into them without the hardware to back them up, hence all the crashes and the sudden screen freezes! Symbian OS was a mistake too.. Nokia should’ve stuck to the basic firmware as before, rather than trying to be all ambitious with the software without backing it up with the required but expensive hardware.

I have now officially abandoned Nokia completely. My next phone will be the HTC Touch or HTC P5550. I am not going anywhere near Nokia ever again. Their chargers are SHIT. I have been through 7 chargers now since the n70 and now the n73. It was a mistake to think that the n73 couldve been an improved n70 (one without all the bugs!).

    Goodbye Nokia. Embrace anything else!!

I have had my n80 for just over a year and the charger has only just stopped working today.
I was not too annoyed at this at first as I remembered that I still had the adapter for the old-style chargers that came with the phone, however when I try it it says ‘not charging’.

This is my 3rd nokia and only the first one (an 8310) has been problem free.

I too think that I will revert back to sony ericsson after this one dies completely!

  43. 43 Cheese

I’ve had a 6233 for 7 months, unfortunately after 4 months I ran over the newly designed ‘feeble’ charger plug with my office chair and had to replace the charger. After a visit to Nokia and a few quid poorer, the second charger lasted only 2 months, and started having the same problems as described in the majority of the messages above (needed to wriggle the phone to charge it, had to turn the phone off too etc)
After a button fault, Nokia replaced the entire motherboard to a new one which could only hold a charge for 8 hours! - at this point, my confidence in Nokia wanned, and I replaced the charger and battery with cheaper aftermarket items. Still it would only keep a charge for 8 hours. So back to the Nokia centre again! where the entire motherboard was replaced once more… the charge now holds, but the screen cracked the very next day whilst I was driving my car (?) - apparently it’s my fault and nokia want me to pay. I’m afraid Nokia have lost themselfs another customer - what a shame.

  44. 44 mark

thanks for ur posts guys. for months ive been wondering y 6 chargers have broken in 2 months! im really piss*d off with nokia!! i only got one cuz its spec was so bloody good but what goods that if u cant f’ing charge it! im gonna go get a universal battery charger and charge it from that untill my contract expires.

  45. 45 Gemma

I have a 6234 and last week my charger packed in after 9 months, it sometimes starts to charge then stops and you have to wiggle the wire at the plug end to get it going.

I’ve had about 10 Nokia phones over the years but this new skinny plug is crap. I went back to Vodafone and they basically told me I’d have to pay £20 for a new one from Nokia. I think this is crap. Given the comments above I don’t know what to do ie new charger or an adaptor.

  46. 46 vanadragos@yahoo.com

i hold the answer to your problems :)
i obviously had the same problem with my n93

what i did is the following

i took the small pin the one that plugs into the phone and bent it to 140 degree angle (let’s say original it’s at 180 degree - flat) it won’t break trust me. now my phone charges when i plug in the charger. it’s true it may drop the charging if i take it in my hand and play with it, but overall it works fine.

please mail me if this worked for you

  47. 47 steph

Both myself and my dad have nokia 6233 between us we have had 5 phone chargers after 6 mnths they have gone wrong .
Trading standards have advised me that if you have a contract phone you should write a concise and factual letter with a spcific date that you want a reply, to the place that the phone was purchased. Stating the supply of goods and services act1982.
The sme goes for pay as you go customers stating the sale of goods act.
If we all write to nokia as well we might get somewhere.
We could also go to our local politicians because the chargers cant be mended and have to be thrown away (unlees they can be recycled)?it all adds to our ever increasing landfill.
    good luck.

  48. 48 SEAN

Yeah, I think Nokia is a load of shit too. My new N95 has been a nightmare to install. Someone should sent this blog to those big boys at Nokia.

  49. 49 Peter

I bought a Nokia N70 one year ago. The charger recently stopped working. The Vodafone shop in Donaghmede, Dublin where I bought it were very unhelpful. Firstly they said that the phone only had a 6 month guarantee. I reminded them that I also was paying €6 per month insurance, to which they replied that the policy only covered the phone and not accessories. I pointed out that I do not consider a charger to be an accessory - it is a vital part without which the phone cannot work. Their next tack was to inform me that there is a €31 excess on any insurance claim and they were prepared to sell me a new charger for €25. I told them where to put their offer, cancelled the insurance policy and vowed never, ever to buy anything in that shop again. I am lucky that I can share my wife’s old phone charger by using an adaptor. I strongly believe that Nokia and their agent, Vofdafone, should come clean and offer to replace for free what is very obviously a defective design. I will have to think again before buying another Nokia.

  50. 50 annoyed

have had my N70 for 2 years, have never really used the charger that came with it as i had to wiggle it from the start. now the adapter is on the blink too. has anyone found a way to fix them, or know the precise porblem eg, which connecter, outer or inner, is at fault?

as soon as i saw the connector i knew it would be an issue, so have treated it with care. the product engineers should be shot.

    thanks

  51. 51 hilsbury

I’ve had my nokia 6233 on contract for a year now and have got through 3 chargers!! First time after 3 months Orange my service provider replaced it without problems, as long as I sent the faulty one back within 7 days, which I did. Second time it stopped working, another 3 months later, they told me I had to get insurance and only by kicking up a massive fuss did I get I get a replacement. Third time, last week, and they now accuse me of “mistreating” my charger and that this was the last time that they would be sending me a new charger. No doubt I’ll need a new one in 3 months time. I’ll be switching to a different phone once the contract is up.

  52. 52 martin

i have four charger all broke two for my n70 and two for my n95 i have had the n95 for two weeks !!! what rubbish chargers

  53. 53 Wigtaik

I’ve had three big pin small pin charging adaptors and 2 nokia pin chargers and they all need flippin’ wigglin’ (haha) to charge my n70 or n73

Only one that worked well(not perfectly) was a generic charger I bought with a big red/green light on it but then that broke after a while.

    FIX THIS NOKIA!!!

in fact they have - new ones can be charged by microusb

    I miss my 6230 :(

  54. 54 sangster

I have found it possible to do a bit of DIY surgery on the n95 chargers using a pair of pliers to slightly bend and crush the end metal connector on them. Obviously you do this at your own risk, but so far I have managed to resurrect a car charger and a mains charger. Using the said pliers, slightly deforms the connection giving a snugger tighter fit. This is doubly helpful in the car charger with the snugger fit meaning that the charger does not slip out of the phone, whilst you are on the move. If you over do it with the pliers, you will break the charger, so be gentle!

  55. 55 Cashy

My N70 charger is having the same problems as well as that adaptor for the old nokia chargers. i think the problem is that i lent it to a friend with a different phone and ever since then it does not work properly. Could it have something to do with using different phones on the same charger?

  56. 56 Mia

I have the problem with my nokia n73 it just wont charge
    HELP!

  57. 57 John Smith

Different charger = whole new charger market to exploit.
Selfish ^&*$^&*ers have messed up this time. The ‘new’ nokia mini plugs design is pathetic!!!

Screw all this crap. We need a robust universal standard for charging.

  58. 58 sullster

Exactly the same just happened to me! But now i can’t get the metal part out of my phone!

  59. 59 dimi

i try to charge my n70 for 4 days.
it’s so tupid.. i’ll buy a new charger, hope this is the problem..

  60. 60 Alan Gladstone

I totally agree. The reason I stayed with Nokia is because I really liked how reliable the first gen GSM phones were - they were solid, you could drop them on the ground, put the pieces back together, and it kept working. And one standard for chargers meant that I could keep buying nokia and keep using the same chargers, which were quite reliable.

    WHAT is NOKIA THINKING?!?!

Please bring back the classic size charger plug in the new phones !!!

  61. 61 stan hair

the bit that you plug the charger into your n95 has fell out with the charger what do i do ?

  62. 62 Ben Toon

My Nokia N70 battery charger has been on the blink since I bought it and now it is totally dead. I was considering buying a replacement but after reading everyone else’s comments, I’m definitely getting a new phone. Thankyou to everyone for helping me to end a years worth of misery.

  63. 63 Ben

My charger has just stopped working after months and monthe of having to get it in the perfect position. Thanks for the comments, at least now I have a reason to get another phone and not use the fact that the interface keeps crashing on me as an excuse.

  64. 64 cornelius

Some people stolen my nokia 6610i,But I want to damage it is it any code that I can use to crush the motherboar using it serial number?
    Please assist.

  65. 65 Mart uk

Same problems here with the Nokia N73. One got damaged so I replaced it with the same model.. But aaaaaaarrgghhh the same damn chartging issues. Nokia have let us dow badly, its sooo frustrating when my phone keeps running out of charge due t difficulty charging in the first place.

I definately will Not by Nokia again!!!

  66. 66 wawenspop

Same problem with 3 Nokia phones. The little charging socket is a TERRIBLE DESIGN. A tiny pin inside that does not connect after a few goes. Very very very bad design. Nokia does NOTHING.
