Nokia Shorts 06 nominees

dinosaur-nokia-short1.jpgHow creative can you be in 15 seconds? Extremely creative, judging by the five nominees in the Nokia Shorts 06 awards, which have been announced today. Nokia asked film-makers to come up with 15-second shorts around any topic they liked, and has boiled the entries down to the final five. They include animation, comedy and the rudest old lady in a lift we’ve ever seen. Not that there’s much competition. Anyway, you can watch them on the official website, and also vote for your favourite.

Watch ITN News on your phone

BT MovioBT has announced that it’s adding the 24-hour ITN News channel to its digital mobile TV service BT Movio. The channel will broadcast updated news bulletins every 15 minutes, covering sports, business, entertainment and politics.

Currently, you can watch the BT Movio service if you buy Virgin Mobile’s Lobster 700TV handset, with the TV channels being free if you’re on a Pay Monthly contract of £25 a month or more, or costing £5 a month if not. Besides ITN News, the service also features BBC One, ITV1, Channel 4 and E4.

ShoZu 3.0 launches

shozu.jpgThe latest version of the ShoZu cameraphone application has launched, for Nokia Series 60 and Microsoft Windows Mobile smartphones. New features include the ability to configure any website or blog as a destination for your snaps, separate destinations for your videos and photos, support for uploading your stuff via Wi-Fi to save on data charges, and the ability to reply to Flickr comments from your phone, if anyone’s rude about your masterpieces. I use ShoZu, and it’s ace, so the upgrade is well worth a look.

Lara Croft goes mobile gambling

laracroft_casino.jpgWhen she’s not fighting off wolves and baddies, Lara Croft is hammering slot machines. This, at least, is the conclusion I draw from her appearance on the list of games at Wild Jack Mobile Casino, which lets UK gamblers have real-money flutters via their phones.

The Tomb Raider game is a five-reel, fifteen-payline slot machine game, with a wild symbol, scatter symbol, and Free Spins bonus game. I assume most of those terms will make sense to you if you understand the world of slots…

NTT DoCoMo’s fertility phone

sperm.jpgLadies, forget having to carry round a detailed chart of your monthly cycle when trying for a baby, so you can whisk your other half off for a spot of fertilising when the time is right. A new phone from Japanese operator NTT DoCoMo rings to alert female owners three days before ovulation, and then again on the day itself. It also boasts several other features designed to appeal to women, such as a paisley design, receipe database, and a button to press to receive a fake ‘call’, to avoid unwanted male attention. Will it make it to the UK? Don’t hold your breath…

Solio iPod charger

solio-charger.jpgDon’t you just hate it when you’re sitting on the beach sipping a Pina Colada, and your iPod runs out of battery power just before you get to Club Tropicana? Fear no more: the £49.95 Solio Charger uses the sun’s warming rays to charge your iPod up, giving up to nine hours of additional tunes while you turn as red as a lobster soak up the sun. It draws power from direct sunlight, and can store it for up to a year. Just beachy.

E-Ten Glofiish X500 PDA

eten-X500.jpgYes, some people are still making PDAs, despite their capabilities being comprehensively nicked by mobile phones. E-Ten claims its strangely-named new Glofiish X500 is the world’s thinnest PDA, with a svelte 1.6cm thickness belying its powerful features. They include the Windows Mobile 5.0 operating system, a built-in mobile antenna, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth AND a GPS receiver. Oh, and a two-megapixel camera.

The PDA is due out by the end of the year in Asia, and coming here soon after hopefully.

Watch out what mobile videos you upload to YouTube

youtube-clip.jpgVideo website YouTube has become a popular way for people to share their cameraphone clips with the rest of the world. But soon you’ll have to think hard about what videos you upload, now that YouTube has been bought by Google.

A Google executive has told MPs that the company will move quickly to remove videos that violate copyright. Although this is mainly focused on TV shows and music videos, it will also apply to, for example, that phone clip you shot at a music gig. D’oh!

Nokia 330 Auto Navigation

nokia-330-auto-navigation.jpgPlanning a motor jaunt across Europe? Nokia has a new gadget that may come in handy. The 330 Auto Navigation is a GPS satnav gizmo with a 3.5-inch colour touch-screen, and a 2GB memory card full of maps of European countries, and detailed route information. You can view the display with 2D or 3D graphics, and the device also plays music and videos, as well as displaying your photos. Nokia says the device will be on sale before Christmas, costing around £240.
