Last week we challenged you to send in your mobile snaps in order to win a Nokia N73 and you certainly didn’t disappoint us! We’ve had literally hundreds of entries flying in via SMS and e-mail, hence the slight delay in getting week 1 results up.
Admittedly not all of them quite fulfilled the brief of ‘being of interest to at least 100 people’ and some of the more (ahem) specialist images were unfortunately unprintable (what sort of a site do you think we are?). Nevertheless there were more than enough strong entries to make selecting our first week winners a tough job.
In the end we plumped for a top three, which will all, make it into the final vote in November.
1. Dump - Peter Wooton
In his own words: The photo was taken on the A414, the cross-Herts route which runs from the west of the county and on towards Felixstowe in Suffolk. The sign is in a layby about halfway between Hatfield and Hertford. After leaving Hatfield, the road passes to the south of Welwyn Garden City, up to Hertford and through the farms and green fields of the Herftordshire countryside. About a mile up the road from the layby is a large waste collection site run by the County Council. As I understand it, tv’s and fridge’s are amongst the worst things to dispose of illegally due to the toxins they contain. Someone was obviously too bone idle to go to the official waste site or didn’t want to pay the charge levied by the local authority to collect such items. OK for them but crap for everyone else. Somebody has got to collect and dispose of such waste and the charges for collecting illegally dumped waste will ultimately lead to an increase in council tax. Not only that, it’s just naff to see dumped rubbish all over the place. Once you get beyond the parts of the county that border London, Hertfordshire is very pleasant, so why spoil it. I come from Watford originally and having lived in an urban environment where the gas works once ruled, I appreciate very much the English countryside and get irritated when it’s blighted unnecessarily.
2. Glacier - Sara
In her own words: We recently visited Alaska on a cruise and saw some absolutely extraordinary sights. This picture was taken as we cruised past the Hubbard Glacier and I managed to catch a large chunk of ice falling from the glacier into the water.
3. Kook - Olley Talibudeen
In his own words: Hugh Harris, lead guitar of the band ‘The Kooks’. Upset as he wants to spoon eat his mayonnaise in peace.
Think you could do better?
If so you still have until the end of the month to prove it! Check out our competition page for details of how to enter and don’t forget to check back next week for week 2 winners!
