Alcatel OT-E801 music mobile

alcatel-ote801.jpgMusic on your mobile doesn’t have to involve a pricey handset. Alcatel has just unveiled the OT-E801 mobile, a rubberised handset that’s available in black or white, and is aimed at music fans on pay-as-you-go tariffs.

The phone includes MP3-playing software, and comes with a 128MB memory card, capable of holding up to 50 tunes transferred from your PC or Mac. However, if you buy a bigger card, you can have up to 2GB of space for songs. But best of all – if you’re on a budget – is the price. It’ll cost you just £39.99 from Argos, Woolworths, T-Mobile and Orange shops.

Updated 8th June ‘07: Following the dozens of posts we’ve had about this phone, we asked Alcatel for some advice for those of you who are still having problems. To read what Alcatel had to say click here.

yea i had that prob but then i formatted the sd card by puttin it into another fone that can format disks and now it works .but does any1 now how to get ur songs as a ringtone.or download more

  12. 12 Simon

    Hi Everyone

I have had the same problem as everyone else but the solution is simple….but hard :-)

The micro SD card needs to be formated. Once this is done then your PC (xp anyway) will recognise the member card as a new storage device and you can then download away.

The hard part is formating the dam card !

I was very lucky and had a multi card reads that tool micro SD’s. Some basic card readers will need a micro SD adaptor. Other than that use another mobile (a friends or even a nice person at the mobile shop you purchased this from) that has the ability to format.

If you would like a larger memory card then I can recomend e-buyer.co.uk They have a 256mb micro SD for under £8 !

    Good luck all

  13. 13 Drito

Does it actually support a 2Gb micro SD??
    Has anyone tried?
    thanks…

  14. 14 Dom

You need to enable the usb on the phone when you plug the phone into the pc it may loose the connection a few times and times out after about 30 seconds so you have to be quick and have your mp3’s ready to tranfer as soon as your computer registers the phone is connected.
Also I would liek to know if there is a way to turn your mp3’s into ringtones on the phone aswell it is quit frustrating there is no mention of it anywhere.

  15. 15 amirul ali

  17. 17 matt

hiys iv had the same prob as everyone else. the memory card seems to get recognized when you load it onto a computer with a memory card reader installed onto it, this is probably why it can read the micro sd. plus theres a file on alcatel website http://www.tctmobile.com where it lets you download a pc converter and mp3 thing that i think will let you convert your mp3 trcks into smaller clips that can be used as an mp3 tone.
i hope that this is useful.
    thanx..

  18. 18 joe

how the fuck can i get my card formatted without having to go to a shop it takes the piss why wont my com recognise my phone!!!

  19. 19 sally

vicked phone.propa useful. jus da ting i neded coz i liste 2 music a lot

  20. 20 matt

if u get a memory card reader u can format it yourself but it doesnt always work and it could be a lil expensive

  21. 21 Anonymous

how is the quality of the mp3s?

  22. 22 lordlife2000

try here for a memory card reader as this web site is cheap
    http://www.mymemory.co.uk/memory/MyMemory/SD/6/in/1/USB2.0/Mobile/Card/Reader

THE MEMORY CARD MUST BE FORMATTED TO FAT NOT FAT 32

    hope this helps

  23. 23 lordlife2000

U can do this in MS Windoze XP right click on memory card and chose format there should be a drop down menu which lets u chose which Format either FAT or FAT32. Also music shouldn’t be any bit rate less than 128 kbps as I found out the hard way. As for this phone I’ve had many mobile phones but this is best value phone from T.mobile just £20 and my Virgin Sim card works with it straight out of the box

  24. 24 Anonymous

go on to cnet i had same prob but now it works

  25. 25 Anon

Have you tried activating USB Connection from Settings menu on phone?

  26. 26 Nessa

Is their a way that i can make the mp3 player work without having 2 format the card an if nt wot uva phones take cards? i no its a stupidd question lol

  27. 27 Anonymous

how do you formatt the memory card it is doin me ed in, so can sum 1 help asap

  28. 28 Anonymous

To format the card the only option is to use a card reader to do it, or insert the mini-SD card into another phone and do it through the phone’s options.

Once you’ve done this, attach the USB to phone and computer, activate USB in the Alcatel’s Settings Menu, and it will be recognised as a mass storage device by Windows.

Make sure you create a folder named ‘MP3′ before putting any onto the phone (by dragging and dropping from your computer), otherwise it won’t read them.

This should solve all of the problems.

My own is trying to get MP3s to play as ringtones. I’ve ‘cut’ the MP3 using the software on the website, but can’t find any options. Anybody any ideas? gorbatayagora@yahoo.co.uk

  30. 30 matt

btw in woolworths they have a cooler white version of the phone where it is on t-mobile but can be on virgin mobile with a 64mb memory card for only 19.99! bargain if u can get it 2 work! lol

  31. 31 Will

Can u download like a music organizer for mobiles and if, were from. thanks Will

  32. 32 Charlie

I have this phone and suffer like everyone else with these problems. I have emailed the manufacturer and Woolworth where I bought it, and have had no response. Might be an idea to do the same. Maybe this is why they are selling it so cheap.

  33. 33 Toma

Plugged it in to the PC (winXP) and it worked first time. No messin’, no formattin, no problem. Great little phone.

  34. 34 mark

which card do i have to get because there are different ones,i would like to get the 512?

  35. 35 Charlie

Wollworths emailed me and suggested I go to Carphone Warehouse and they will format the card for me. Will try that tomorrow.

  36. 36 bumpy big balls

wollworths said the same to me. carphone warehouse and all the other name chains do not do this. find a shop that unlocks phones and the likes. wooloworths knew of this problem last year and still sold them. this could be a case for watchdog.

Am going to take it back and get my money back.

  39. 39 -x-Nessa-x-

    Hi
To formatt the micro sd card go to the carphone warhouse and explain to them whats wrong, if they dont know what to do tell them to put the card in another music phone (they dont sell alcatel phones) and to formatt it that way they should’t refuse service but if they do go back later and ask another member of staff IS worth the hassle!

  40. 40 Anonymous

having problems with the usb connection can anyone help me?

  41. 41 Ferdinand

The problem with the SD-card and mp’3-songs is that the songs must be placed in an directory on the SD-card called: MP3
If it’s not on the card then simply make a new directory with windows explorer on PC.

  42. 42 matt

i cant get the bloody mp3 tracks to go into ringtones! the software they give u on the web is soo confusing and is an absolute waste of time, and has no instructions what so ever to tell u how 2 use it! so if anybody has figured it out plz can u reply 2 this message! thanx.

arghh!!!!!!!!!!!!! ive just bought this fone nd when i plugged the usb in it dosent reconise it ive tried it in 3 different pcs nd it dosent work.arghhhhhhhhhhhhh!!!!!!!!!! im taking thsi fone back as soo as possible!

  44. 44 Miguel

USB problems = activate via the phones menu. Menu>Settings>USBconnection>Activate.

Format Card= right click on drive (in my computer) selct format 32 (not fat 32) that’s it.

You also need to create a folder in the drive (where the files are) call it ‘MP3′ but all your mp3’s in there!

    Hope this helps :)

  45. 45 niels

im going to get the alactel do you think i shud get it ??????????????????????????

Dear sir I bought the ot/801 at christmas time but to this day i cannot goe the mp3 player to work .Please can you tell me we did not get a disk to down load the soft were just a lead to plug into the phone and computer we are lost many thanks

  53. 53 Davebat

Once the phone is connected to your PC via the USB cable you must go into the Settings menu and activate the USB. Following this, (give it a minute), you can drag and drop music files into the phone.

  54. 54 roy

i cant get the usb 2 connect to my pc so i cant put music on it any one help plz

  55. 55 Davebat

Roy, as above, once the phone is connected, go into the Settings menu on your phone and select ‘Activate’ for the USB option. After a few moments your PC will ’see’ the phone and you can drag and drop files into the music folder.

On reading the comments posted here it sounds a lot like people are not reading the instructions that come with the phone. A PC will not automatically recognise the phone is connected and this is becuase the mini USB port is used as the music port as well as the charging port. If you want to transfer, (music), data you must first tell the phone by way of activating the USB for this purpose.

I have had no problems transfering music files and having upgraded the micro SD card to 2G am now enjoying the very best of my music collection.

  56. 56 xrax

just lemme know how to load ringtones or wallpapers..music part is sorted out

  57. 57 matt

id advise all of you not to get this phone or just give it back as its really poor once used for a long amount of time, no texts will go through, it shuts down on its own after regular use and the mp3 player cant even be added as ringtones or listened to out loud! so id warn everybody about these problems before they decide to buy it! also u can get a better range of mp3 phones off the link and you can trade in this poor one for a better one and get 10pounds off! might be worth it.

  58. 58 adrian

  62. 62 Dan

Hey You Do Not Need A Software All You Have To Do Is Plug It In The USB And Go To Settings And Then Click On USB Then Activate, Its Really Simple And I Never Read The Booklet

Also You Can Connect It To The Computer And Go To My Computer The Right Click The Drive And Click Format, Note: You Have To Make A New Folder After You Formatted It Called mp3.

The Only Trouble I Have Had With My Phone Is That I Dont Know How To Get New Ringtones Or Make My MP3 My Ringtones

  69. 69 birdy

You DON’T need to format the microsd card. As said above (very clearly) activate the usb connection in the settings menu.

It is VERY simple to use - once you know how;)

I was like you all. I didn’t use the instruction manual. When I couldn’t get my macintosh to recognise the SD card, I did accept to look at the manual but as usual couldn’t find the pertinent info.

After wasting 2 hours phoning to technical departments and searching the web for solutions I finally went through all the menus in the phone to see what was offered.

The solution was found in less than 2 minutes!!

  70. 70 birdy

Any headphones with a minijack will work.

  74. 74 Marc

    Hi,

I think i have the solution to most of your problems with the OT 801. To get your MP3s on the OT 801 is really Simple: You don’t need any software!

When you plug the USB cable it should act as a memory stick: you should see it as removable disk. You should have a file named “mp3″ where to drag and drop your songs.

The point is for some reasons (due to windows???) the “mp3″ file doesn’t always appear (on my laptop for instance). In this case you just have to create in the removable disk (your OT 801) a new file: “mp3″ (menu FILE/New and small caps!)and drag and drop all your mp3 file in and nowhere else.

    good luck!

    Marc

  75. 75 Mike

Don’t you people read the advise given out by the useful posters here and the instruction manual given out with the phone?! The same questions have been answered over and over again!! It takes about 5 minutes to read the posts here that contain ALL the answers to your highly repetative questions!!

How do you expect us to answer these questions when you insist on typing in a language that barely resembles English! Is it really that hard to type a sentence using proper language?

  76. 76 VDO

Somebody know how play my mp3 as ringtone??? plz tell me… thks…

  77. 77 VDO

Naturally the E801 is perfectly capable of using MP3 files as ringtones. In order to ‘cut’ an MP3 tone from a complete MP3 track, there’s an MP3 converter supplied on the Web site. This program does actually work, the INQ succeeded in ‘cutting’ a 20 second ringtone with it. But the control keys are badly translated from the original Chinese version and you have to guess what their function actually is

  78. 78 Davebat

Mike, I have to agree with your observations regarding the persistent and exceptionally poor use of the English language with which to entreat advice and support from others and the apparent inability of people to read instructions.

I can only assume it to be a reflection of the ‘instant’ lifestyle people seem to expect nowadays and the mediocrity with which they approach life in general.

Glad you are enjoying your phone.

  79. 79 Amie

i bought diz fone but i cant put songs on it da card is in n wen i connect it to da usb on ma p.c n downloads songs it goes on phone but wen i try to play on the phone it says no valid mp3 file? i dont get what i have to do plz help

  80. 80 omg ! it is sam.

ok… i had the same prob,

    what i did was.

Menu > Settings > USB connection > Activate …. then plug usb in 2 the phone and then usb in 2 the computer (for some reason it dont work if the usb is is already in the computer and then i plug the phone in 2 it so yeah….)
    then jus drag and drop.

o yeah and if it says no valid mp3 file then you prob tryin 2 put a format other than mp3 on the phone.

  92. 92 Davebat

You all just need to take your time……!

Assuming you have assembled the phone, do the following:

Plug the usb cable into your PC.

Plug the other end of the usb cable into the phone - you will see a message on the phone saying it is charging.

Press the ‘Menu’ button, (top left on the keypad) and go to settings.

Go to USB and press ‘Select’ button, (top left on the keypad)

When you see the word ‘Activate’ on the phone screen press the ‘Select’ button, (top left on the keypad)

You will now see a message saying ‘usb connecting, can not play music now!’

On your PC, go START menu/my computer/ then look for the removable drive. Double click on it and you will see a folder named mp3.

Drag your mp3 files from your PC onto this folder and let them copy over.

All music files must be in mp3 format.

You do not requrie to format the mico SD card.

If you have deleted the mp3 folder on your phone, make another on you PC and drag it accross.

To disconnect your phone, go to the system tray, (bottom right of your PC desktop) and click on the icon which lists removable drives. Choose ’safety remove hardware’.

Of course, you could just read the instructions!

    Above all - have fun!

  93. 93 Davebat

You must use the supplied headset to listen to music.

  94. 94 Davebat

Reece - it is good isn’t it! :-)

  95. 95 Davebat

The phone comes with a folder on it called ‘mp3′

The phone will only play music, (mp3 files), in the folder called mp3

You can only see this folder when connected to a PC - once connected go to My computer and double click on removable drive.

Drag your music - it must be in mp3 format - into the phones mp3 folder

If you have deleted the phones mp3 folder, simply make another.

    :-)

  96. 96 danny

dis fone is crap i cant download nothing because i dont no how and cant get any help if some 1 nos how also let me no

  97. 97 Davebat

    Danny,

All music must be put into the folder named mp3

You do not require to format the mico SD card.

If you have deleted the mp3 folder on your phone, make another on your PC and drag it across.

To disconnect your phone, go to the system tray, (bottom right of your PC desktop) and click on the icon which lists removable drives. Choose ’safety remove hardware’.

Oh, and by the way - you could just read the instruction manual!

    :-)

    Hi,
    MP3:
with this phone, you can listen mp3 from the SD card. But you CAN’T change the ringtone with the MP3 from the SD card. THE SD card + MP3 Player and the phone are too separate tool.
But you can put your personnal data and carry them in your phone (it’s easy than having another USB stick), and use TrueCrypt to secure them

    HeadPhone :
the original headphone is crap, and I have a good headphone but jack model.
who try to use a mini USB - Jack Adapter?

I tried the headphone for Motorola sell on EBay. doesnt’ work.

Find another web stie which sell some:

i have no idea why the 512mb that came with it works, although i had to format it, but a 1gig card won’t. I’ve tried the FAT and FAT32 format options and the gig card works in everything else. If you can get your card to work and it does seem pot luck then i think for £25 including a 512mb card from currys its a good deal. But if you end up hanging yourself in frustration at trying to get another card to work then its crap. What is even more crap is their website which is unbelievably crap/dead/pointless.
It does seem that its cheap because it has lots of problems. I’m happy with mine for £25 as a phone/flashdrive/mp3 player. Not much else around for that money.
to activate the usb go to menu/settings/activate USB and it should recognise it if you have the patience to wait. Those who have posted and not even read the previous posts to get all the answers already need to know that it isn’t just the phone, its also because you are as thick as shit, and need information spoon feeding. And write in english, spanish, french whatever just write in a language, putains/cabronitos/muppets!

  112. 112 thomasbentley

Seriously cool phone currently 5 pound with quidco discount through orange shop ,
I want to play phone through mp3 compatible car radio , does any one know what cable works with I think mini Jack?

  113. 113 Anyeos

    To make the mp3 work:
    Turn off your phone.
Insert properly the microSD card in the slot (this support up to 2GB).
Turn on your phone. You will need having it working with your SIM chip so you can access the menu.
Connect the USB Cable to cell phone.
Connect the USB Cable to computer.
In the phone go to Menu->Settings->USB connection and select Activate.
Now you can format, partitione or access the contents of the microSD card.
For that I use Linux so I formated it:
    mkdosfs -F 16 -I /dev/sdb
where “/dev/sdb” is the microSD card. Change it according your computer drives order.
If you use Windows I guess what you can do something as me in Linux.
Now you have formatted the microSD. It is moment to mount and copy mp3 music in it, then:
In Linux I mount the device (in Windows you don’t need it).
    mount /dev/sdb /mnt/phone
Where /dev/sdb is the microSD and /mnt/phone the directory where I will mount it. You need root access and you need to create /mnt/phone manually (mkdir /mnt/phone).
    Now create the “mp3″ directory:
    mkdir /mnt/phone/mp3
In Windows you can do it with the “Explorer”.
Now you can copy all mp3 files from your hard disk to the phone.
Before deataching the phone remember unmount it in Linux, in Windows remember choosing secure extraction.
    umount /mnt/phone

    All gone.
Now you can disconnect your USB Cable and go to main screen in your phone pressing repeteadly the “hang up” key. Next press the play button or choose the mp3 player and you can listen music.
This phone only permits you to listen music from earphones not from speaker.
I’m searching for some hack or firmware update to get more functions because the hardware of this phone permits you more than actually do.

    Have a nice day, bye.

  122. 122 Obleo

This is a great little ‘phone for the money, no need to format sd card, just create ‘mp3′ folder in removable drive (having first activated usb).
It is a little limited re. ringtones etc. but the audio quality is very good.

  125. 125 Davebat

Amazing how many people are not bothering to read the solutions to thier ‘apparent’ problems posted here. Curiously I didn’t find I had to format the card at all. An ‘mp3′ folder was already there on the micorSD card and I just dragged my mp3 files into it. I have since bought a 2GB card and after putting an ‘mp3′ folder onto it have filled it with more tracks. - it worked without a hitch. Smashing phone/mp3 player for so little cash!

got my phone for £19.99 incl. £10 top-up and 512mB micro card. Great stuff
My only problem is the screen goes black after a few seconds of no use (IN ADDITION to the screensaver which is black screen with time/date)
    Anyone else have this?

  135. 135 stew

happy with my 512MB phone/mp3 player - but why does my screen go black after only a few seconds? this is different from the screensaver which is black plus time/date details.

  136. 136 Davebat

Stew, there are powersave and screensaver settings though I havn’t bothered much with them. Allwing the phone screen to go off aftr a few seconds suits me since I use the mp3 player so much and don’t want to run down the batery unnecessarily. You will need to fiddle about and see what happens. :-)

  137. 137 stew

    thanks Davebat
by the way has anyone got the conversion software to work? or found instructions? I can’t work it intuitively to crop existing mp3.

I had one of the shit white ones from woolworths. It looks like a faulty batch of phones went out to me. Yes I have read the instructions, Yes I have activated the USB and Ive even sent it back to Alcatel in a little Jiffy bag and the fucking thing still cant play music. Stamp on it. Made me feel better.

  142. 142 stew

make sure all your mp3s are in the mp3 folder on the micro card and de-activate the USB connection from the PC before initiating music player.

  143. 143 Davebat

Yes, the songs will not play unless they are stored on the micro SD card in a folder labelled mp3

I hate to say it….but it says so in the instructions!

  144. 144 Chris

I have no doubt that you are both correct and thank you for your wisdom, Its getting my PC to recognize the USB conection thats the problem. All my other bits N bobs bring up a removable device but not this one. Maybe the French cant make phones as well as cars without problems.

  145. 145 CJL

OK, I’ve been through everything in the right order and I’ve found that it is very easy to use this ‘phone for music with the supplied SD card (128MB in the case of my son’s ‘phone) as long as you follow the instructions. My problem is that I can’t get a 1GB microSD to work. I can USB connect, see the mp3 folder on the PC and copy music to it. I can even see the titles on the ‘phone once disconnected and start playing one of the tracks - but as soon as soon as I try to change the track I get a microSD card error and then can’t see anything until I power the ‘phone off and on again. I’ve tried formatting FAT and FAT32 - makes no difference.

SD card I’m using is Kingston Technologies. A couple of people have mentioned succesfully using 2GB cards - can you tell me what brand they are? I’m sure the problem is not the ‘phone. Sure it’s basic but what do you expect for ten quid?!

  146. 146 Davebat

CJL, I am using a 2GB Sandisk card and all I did was use a card reader to access the card on my laptop. I found the SD card under My Computer, created a folder on it called mp3 and then dragged my music accross into it, (in mp3 format). I then put the card into the phone and it all worked. Don’t know if that helps at all but it was a simple as that for me. Good luck. :-)

  147. 147 Davebat

Chris - what system software are you using on your PC? If I want to add a song to to the phone, I just plug in the phone and it immediately displays a message after which I use the menu to activte the USB. I find then that the computer makes the usual noise to demonstrate it ’sees’ something and aftershows the ‘removable device’.

  148. 148 CJL

Davebat - thanks for the info. I’ll try a Sandisk card. The one that came with the ‘phone is the same brand so maybe there’s a compatibility issue. They’re supposed to be generic but who knows! I’ll report back. Did you format FAT or FAT32? For completeness what is your PC running - just so I can try to exactly emulate your setup? Interestingly I can’t even see the Kingston card in my much more expensive Samsung ‘phone!

  149. 149 Chris

Davebat-All sorted. XP still wont recognize the phone USB so Ive just bought myself an MP3 player instead and its the donkeys doughnuts. Does exactly what it says on the tin and hay, might even super glue it to me phone for a cool new look. In your face Alcatel!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

im going to get 1 of these phones , just curious tho does the phone let you view pictures if there on the micro sd?

  151. 151 Mangaroth

Anyone got this phone to work with vista yet or do i just go out and buy myself a card reader…. I only own two devices that dont work with vista.. this phone and my digital camera.. everything else works.. ps I have a 1 gb card in my phone and had no probs whatsoever when i was running xp… cool phone.. just want it to work with vista.

  152. 152 dek

can you view pictures stored on the memory card with the phone?

  153. 153 Nigel

    It’s simple: phone menu -> settings -> USB -> activate USB ->

  154. 154 stew

you can’t view pictures on the phone except the few wallpapers.
the only thing the memory card does is carry the mp3s for the player (although you could use it just for storage of any old files if you wanted)

couldn’t agree more with davebat, if i wasn’t one to try things out for myself, i wouldn’t have touched this phone with a 200 foot pole! turns out the so called first world country residents have the same problems they attribute to us ( i’m writing from Nigeria!) got the phone 2 days ago with an all french manual, figured it all out after running thru this website the day before…..and it’s working perfectly… except for the battery lasting a measly 4.5 hours, it should be able to do better, its all good though, open to suggestions. thanx folks, u made my day…great phone, can’t wait for my 2 gig card.

  159. 159 bisto34

I’m not a thicko, but after reading and following the advice on here, still can’t get my music transfered onto this phone( £10 from orange website less £5 from quidco !!!) when I connect the usb lead and I activate the usb port on the phone, it says it is connecting but does not show up as a storage device in my computer, but as an unknown usb device in device manager!!! has anyone got any advice for this problem??? I have a canon printer with memory card reader, but it wouldn’t let me format the card as it says it is write protected( But it isn’t!!!) so i put the card in my wifes samsung and formatted it there!!!

  160. 160 Dibley

    Help please…

I can successfully paste mp3 files onto the phone (E Drive) - I know this ’cause I can then play them back from the phone through realplayer or windows mediaplayer and listen to them on the PC. But when I try to listen to them on the phone it says… yes you guessed it “no valid mp3 file present” - aaaaaaaagh! I’ve tried different mp3 formats and nothing works. Have looked through the message board and can’t find the solution to this problem. Only strange thing is under My Computer the E drive comes up unnamed - whereas a number of posted solutions seem to suggest it should say MP3.
    Ideas welcome at nickthevicparker@btinternet.com TA.

  162. 162 The Jerk who bought this phone

Red the whole pole but haven’t found any solution for the ringtones. It seems to me that this phone truly is an mp3 player. The reason I’ve bought this phone was to put some cool mp3 ringtones on it cause I heard it has a great sound when it plays out lout but, when I gained a little knowledge and saw it for my self that no matter how hard I’ll try I won’t get any ringtones to work on this, nor to play the mp3’s out loud, I realized that I hate myself for not buying sony-ericsson. Anyways, this phone realy is a load of shit and all of you people out there would be beter off with an mp3 player, cause this phone is nothing better from one ;)
PS: Looks like the poor always gets ripped off by the rich and their cheap shit
    Best regards from the Jerk }{

LOL - what phone do you think you bought?

  165. 165 dami

    hey dibley,

if i got u right and all is well with ur pc the e drive should come up unnamed, what u should have is a filder IN the phone (e drive) with the name “mp3″ .u create it if u don’t already have one, then drag all ur music files into that folder, it should work then.

    hop it makes sense

  166. 166 dami

    that’s hope with an “e”

  167. 167 Anonymous

For all you out there who are having trouble with this phones mp3 player, have gone through the usual settings/usb/activate procedure, and the phone does not show on your removable drive, and you get the message “usb device not recognised”. This is what I did, I bought a 5 in 1 plug in card reader/writer (£2.99 including delivery), also a micro sd/sd adaptor (£2 including delivery from hong kong). Formatted the card, made a file called mp3 put my music in there then put the micro card back into the phone and it now plays music. Hope this solves your problems.

  168. 168 Gary

Tried for ages to get my computer to recognise the MP3 player using all the info above. Kept being told there was an error with USB storage device. Eventually plugged the USB cable into a USB 1.0 socket instead of the usual USB 2.0 socket IT WORKED FIRST TIME and worked no problems. Give it a try

  169. 169 Davebat

Never, in the hisotry of the mobile, has so much been written by so many about such a little, (cheap,) phone!

Sounds like people are working through the problems though…and don’t you just come to love it once it works for you!

At time of writing I have it plugged into my PC playing all my fav stuff through Wiondows Media Player….Sooper!

i think this is a bunch of cock

y cant the card come formatted!

  176. 176 Davebat

    Hi Matty,

The card needs nothing done to it. It comes preloaded with a folder labelled mp3. Drag your mp3 files into it once you have connected the phone and activated the USB connection in the settings menu.

Alternately you can use a card reader to connect the microSD card to your PC. Either way you are not required to ‘format’ the card.

Hi all. In case you’re still having problems with the E801, we asked Alcatel for some advice to help you out. To read the story click here.

  186. 186 Veni

    hi all,
there is no problem at all with the music player. You have to format your memory card in FAT , allocation size 16 kilobytes.

Once it’s formated make a folder called “mp3″ (small letters!) and put your mp3 files there. They will appear in the music player.

    sarah,

the answers to your questions are all in the above comments. your music must be in mp3 format.

  189. 189 Desperate Dan

For me all I did was:-
    1. Plug the USB cable into phone & PC
    2. On the phone, select Menu/Settings/USB Connection
    3. Select Activate

I could then see my phone from explorer as another disk allowing drag & frop of MP3 files

  191. 191 Alcatel Mobile Phones Hotline

    1 - E801 PC connection

To put music onto your new E801 handset your computer should be equipped with Microsoft Windows XP or 2000. However if your computer has Windows 98 then a pilot is available for installation on the following website http://www.tctmobile.com.

    Pilot Installation
On the TCT Mobile homepage click on TOOLS & GOODIES, SOFTWARE use the scroll panel to find the E801 handset and click on the image.
Here you will have the opportunity to install the Windows 98 driver.

Establishing a connection between E801 and USB port
Ensure that both the E801 handset and your computer are both switched on and the Micro SD card (delivered in the box or bought separately) is correctly positioned in the handset (for help please see user guide, page 16).

Plug the USB cable into the E801 handset and your computer. Using the settings menu on the E801 handset activates the USB connection.
The computer should then recognize the E801 handset. If for some reason the connection is not correctly working please try another USB port on the computer.

The Micro SD card is considered as an additional disk and should be visible when PC connection has been completed.

If the connection is not possible please refer to user guide for hotline help phone numbers.

    2 – E801 Music earring

Music on this handset can only be listened to via the headset provided.

The E801 handset plays MP3 songs ONLY (other music file such as wav, .aac, etc cannot be played), also please note that any MP3 stored on the Micro SD card cannot be used as a ring-tone.
The E801 music handset cannot download ring-tones on the Micro SD card.

When the connection between the handset and PC has been correctly established a default folder named “MP3” should be visible, if not please create it. Copy and paste any songs that you want from your computer into the “MP3” folder displayed, this will ensure that you can listen to tunes on your handset. Music cannot be played from any other folder therefore please don’t create any other folder in an attempt to listen to music.

Certain MP3 are not compressed in the same way than a standard MP3, therefore if you have difficulty playing a particular a song this will most probably be the issue. In such a case, please download the GB converter from our web site http://www.tctmobile.com menu TOOLS & GOODIES, SOFTWARE use the scroll panel to find the E801 handset and click on the image.
Here you will have the opportunity to install the GB converter required for the handset.

For any additional information on how to read your MP3 songs please consult your Music Player User Guide manual (page 5).

hey Alcatel Mobile Phones Hotline - is there any way to use earbuds other than the ones that come with the phone?

  195. 195 Sausages

So has anyone found a suitable mini-usb to 3.5mm adapter? They exist for just about every phone out there, I’m really suprised no 3rd party has created one yet. It’s an easy cash-in.

From previous comments I can only assume the current ones advertised on ebay are not compatible with this Alcatel.

  196. 196 CJL

I’ve been waiting for an adapter to arrive from HK for a week or so. If it works I’ll leave a description of where it came from. So far I’ve tried one eBay sourced adapter that was described as mini-USB, but wasn’t - so it didn’t fit.
In the meantime can anyone tell me where I can buy a replacement for the headset that came with the phone? The original has broken and neither the Alcatel site, TCTMobile or http://www.acbs-gsm-store.com can provide one.

  197. 197 Sausages

Nice one CJL, will be interested to know whether you get an adapter that works.

Someone mentioned a link to mobilefun’s adapter above, I contacted them and they’re sure it’s not compatible with our Alcatels.

  198. 198 David

CLJ, could u provide a link to the store you ordered your adapter from? i might be able to tell whether itll work with the alcatel e801 or not just by looking ;) tnx……..

  199. 199 CJL

The adapter still hasn’t arrived. Having looked closely at a Motorola RAZR (which it’s supposed to be for) I’m less and less confident that it will fit when it does arrive - the tabs in the middle of the mini USB socket in the two phones are a different size and shape.
David, URL of the item is: http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=120110786718. Let us know what you think.
I’ve still no luck in sourcing a replacement set of standard earphones. Again, if I do manage to find some I’ll post the URL here.
I did stumble across a planned docking station for Alcatel ‘phones that looks pretty cool though, see: http://www.cellatel.com/accessories.html. Assumes it’ll fit the E801 of course….

  200. 200 Erexen

Has any1 tryed this with a 4gb mini sd card?
And whats wrong with the adapter u get with the phone?
I use better earphones with it

  201. 201 horse with no name

    @Erexen, E801 supports up to 2gb only.

What do you mean the adapter you use with the phone? You’re able to plug other earphones into the E801? I’m pretty sure the next model up from the E801 supports this, the E801 itself comes with its standard headset and no method of connecting 3.5mm headphones.

Feel free to enlighten us…. ;)

  202. 202 CJL

Adapter I ordered does not work. It is fine with Motorola phone but not the E801 (this was at http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=120110786718). Don’t go ordering one of these, it won’t work. It fits into the mini USB port on the phone but the tab inside the hole in the phone is proprietary to Alcatel it seems. Not sure that anyome will be able to help us here - unless someone Alcatel can!
‘Horse with no name’ - we’ve been trying to find somewhere that can supply a convertor to change standard headset socket to use 3.5 mm phones. No luck so far. Looks like I’m going to have to get the soldering iron out…

  203. 203 Erexen

i got an adapter thats has a volume control from mini usb to 3.5mm.
i think its 3.5mm is that standard size for earphones?
or the bigger 1 they use for big headphones?

  204. 204 Erexen

    # the adapter also has a 1-2 meter wire and mic.
Is it just me or is the volume on this phone realy low even on high setting?

  205. 205 horse with no name

@Erexen, could you provide a link to the adapter, or was it given to you with the phone?

    thanks

  206. 206 Erexen

im afraid It came with the phone and its make by alcatel so they might sell it on there site

  207. 207 Erexen

sorry for the stupid question but can some1 tell me how to check the credit on the phone cos my manual didn’t come in english

  208. 208 CJL

Been doing a bit more research. If you read this http://www.mobile-review.com/review/alcatel-e805-en.shtml it describes the newer model (E805) which, apparently, comes with an adapter for a 3.5 mm socket. So, if anyone from Alcatel is monitoring this forum can you PLEASE tell us where we can source one of these from. Maybe anyone buying an E801 today will get one like Erexen did. If this is the case then someone must be making them!

  209. 209 Barry Storr

Please can you inform me of the site to download the English Instruction Manual

  210. 210 pully

does anyone know where i can get headphones for this phone? im finding them almost imposible to find, and the standard motorola ones dont work : ( meh

  211. 211 Erexen

yeah that might my why as i only bought myn a about a week ago

  212. 212 Shawn

i got mine 3 days ago and no headphone adapter was inluded and the alcatel earphones are pretty mediocre if not poor in quality. shame cause the phone is not too bad at all :/

  213. 213 mullllllll

you cant play music outloud, you cant transfer pictures or wallpapers, the headphones are uncomfortable, a lot of the time my songs decide to switch off for no reason and it hardly sends any of my messages.

    waste of fucking money.

  214. 214 Erexen

So any1 know how to check the credit???

  215. 215 German

    Hi!
I’m writing from Germany, so you have to excuse my bad English. I hope I can help you with your adapter. Motorola is using Mini-USB with 5pins… And Alcatel is expected (I’m not sure) to use 11pins… There are not too much adapters with 11pins, but HTC has some for its smartphones or T-Mobile MDA, O2…. I’ve found some on German Amazon, Ebay too… Some answers would be great ;-)

  221. 221 MavicX44

hi, can anyone help me , how can i use is as a ring tone?…
    can i download new wallpapers???

  222. 222 Davebat

    MavicX44 - no you can’t.

  223. 223 Davebat

bruce2007 - The SDmicro card needs to be fully inserted before activating hte USB.

  224. 224 Davebat

simon woodall - First, you don’t need to foramt the SDMicro card. If you have formatted it, you need to create a folder on it and name it mp3. The phone will only play mp3 music files from the SDMicro card, and only if they are in a folder named mp3 on the SDmicro card.

  225. 225 earphones/adapter issue

So does anyone know who is supplying the adapters for the newer model E805 or where to get a similar adapter to fit a 3.5mm jack and replace the poor quality earphones that came with the phone?

Can someone tell me, if this adapter will work, as long as someone said that alcatel has 11 pins (not 5, compared to motorola)

  230. 230 CJL

Yassen, I very much doubt that the item you’ve found on Ebay will work. I’ve tried 2 different ones so far and they won’t do the job. Fine in a Motorola but not the E801. Problem is that the Alcatel uses a 10 pin mini USB connector (not 11 as I said before - I can’t count…). All the others use mostly 5. This is not an issue in itself, but the location of the pins is. Alcatel pin locations are different. There is a diagram showing all the pins on GSM-Forum and I tried to use this to make my own connector. Because I’m useless with a soldering iron I failed, but I suggested to the bloke in the forum that he might want to take a look at this site and offer to make adapters for all us folks that are desparate for them. Hopefully he’ll accept the challenge. It’s got to be worth a few quid to get hold of one of these. In the end I did make my own, but by cutting off the Alcatel headset connector and using that. Works fine and now I can plug in speakers etc (or at least my kid can whose phone it is).

  232. 232 Yassen

@CJL - My friend, a haven’t bought anything, I was just asking… However, since I’ve lost my original headphones I can’t use their jack, that’s why I’m searching for an answer. So isn’t there a 10pin to 3.5mm convertor? Or does any other phone use this type of mini usb? Someone please help.

I live in Bulgaria and here I can’t find anywhere a spare headphones. The told me the headphones go only with a new phone…crap.

  233. 233 COCO

Guys, i’ve got the cell with 2 gb, hearing my music while connected to the pc (one i’ve never tried before),the micro sd is formatted in fat32,the first time i’ve connected the cell i formatted it with windows xp with no problems at all.
The only thing is that i haven’t found any software or hacker who made the cell use the mp3’s you load from the sd and use it as ringtones or make the mini usb gets in the telephone memory instead of the micro sd.
If anyone needs any help i’m always available.

Sorry Yassen - we have the same trouble here. No 10 pin mini USB to 3.5 mm convertors. Take a look at http://gsmhosting.com/vbb/showpost.php?p=2503307&postcount=6 for the circuit diagram if you want to have a go at building one. Apparently you can use a standard 5 pin mini USB but you need to modify it so that the pins are in the right place. Real pain in the A. That’s why I just e-bay’d for a whole phone to get a spare headset. Can’t find anyone to sell just the ‘phones.
Alcatel - if you’re monitoring this forum please help!
Anyone had any luck unlocking one of these for other networks?

i have a problem with this phone.
when i put in tha micro-sd card(1GB) says “Micro-SD card error”.
if i push the mp3player button more times, enjoy the music fine
but when i want to play next song , i got the message “no memory card”
sometimes works, sometimes no , dont want to read the card:( any microsd card
is here a solution ? or some firmware ?
when i leave empty the phone, without card, i got the message “microsd card error” just after 7-10 seconds.
when i put in the card, i got the same message after 2-3 secconds ,(microsd card error) ;( i formatted the card , but no result

  240. 240 Uberquaker

My Alcatel E801 plays MP3’s like a charm now

    - I formated my 1Gb mSD card via computermanagement in FAT(16)
    - I created a MP3\ directory on that mSD card.

The .mp3 files copied to tht directory played fine via the USB headphones that were delivred with the phone.

  241. 241 JuiCe

Uberquaker , you formatted the microsd card in windows? (right click on card and format?)

  242. 242 codecalcatel

Cool phone, didn’t have any problem in uploading mp3. You don’t need any special software nor drivers just to make it work. The question is, is there a way that I could make the uploaded mp3 as my ringtone?

Any help would be highly appreciated.

  243. 243 codecalcatel

By the way, don’t make things complicated in formating the sd card. If ever the system unit didn’t installed the necessary driver needed (if ever it is….). Just right click on “My Computer” >> Select “Hardware” tab >> then “Device Manager” >> finally, click on “scan for hardware changes”. Restart you system unit to update the drivers installed on your pc.

mp3 folder will be created automatically.

Upload your mp3 at the “mp3″ folder created.

Also the good thing about this phone is that i can use it as a flash disk.

  244. 244 Alcatelek

This phone is a piece of rubbish. People say because it’s cheap. Not really. Why should I pay anything for phone which is a crap? Because it has a nice name? It lacks standard features. I don’t need to spend £30 for sth not worth. I could keep my money. People, don’t buy it unless it gets better software AND headphone adaptor.

  245. 245 Blink

Alcatel OT-E801 is a basic mobile phone that can be use for texting and calling…..Which was originally the use of a certain mobile phone. This cannot be called a crap because it doesn’t have fancy features and headphone adaptor……those are simply add-ons and you will always get for what you pay for.

I hope it clears the air!

  246. 246 Naoki

Well i bought this phone coz its simple and yet trendy. one thing i like is that it has a memory card slot. and i can listen to all my fave music all the time. i even improvise a usb cable that connects my phone into an amplifier to share great music to my neighbors. well its as simple as that.

  247. 247 emma

iv jst brought a new one got the music on fine but it wont play can you tell me how 2 get it to work please ???

  249. 249 marko

Well i didnt format the dam card and its working

  250. 250 winsome-froi

After the memory card is formatted, you may create a directory or folder named “MP3″ and this is where you store or save all your MP3 files. Otherwise the phone would not be able to read your mp3 music.

Just being curious though… it says in the product specifications:

    Messaging
    SMS with predictive input ( T9 )
SMS product memory (up to 250 sms)
Group messaging (up to 30 recipients)

My question is, how can I use the maximum of 250 sms, if it’s true that SMS product memory is up to 250 SMS?

hi. i did what the manual exactly said. and i had no problem whatsoever in activating the usb setting and transferring mp3 file in the already there mp3 folder. i properly disconnected it from the pc, placed the headset, pressed play on the side, and the phone said “no valid mp3 present”. how is that?

im beginning to get frustrated. please… help… anybody…

  254. 254 akm

great phone, 2 bad people got problems with putting music on them.

My experience with putting music on this phone:

    Buy an microSD card.
Put it in an SDadaptor (supplied?).
Plug that into your pc with a CardReader (comes sometimes with ur pc)
Format the Card in Windows. (Fat!?)
While it’s busy think about changing the world.
When its done, put the MicroSD back into your phone, connect an usb cable from your pc to your phone.
    Open the drive.
Make folder called “mp3″ in root.
    Say “cheese”
Place your mp3’s in this map.
    You’re done.

    BTW it worked for me.

Only problem i had with the phone is that it went off and never went on again. Ahh, But that reminded me of my garantue lol:P

    Great phone!

One question for you, is it possible to play mp3’s through the built in speaker? I mean, with the ringtones its possible too.

  255. 255 headphones req

i think its rather stupid for a large company like alcatel to make a phone like the e801 and not to make spares for it like the headphones as these have to be the most fragile thing about this phone
if someone could give me a contact number to a uk customer support center i would realy like to give them a piece of my mind
its a bloody good phone for the price and if you have problems and read through the posts here they are all sortable
