For those who’ve missed it, the not-at-all-redolent of the iPhone ‘M8′ prototype from Meizu has been generating a little online buzz for its somewhat striking similarity to Apple’s device. However, recently translated posts in the Meizu forums appear to be from one of the handset’s development team, and give some more insight into the device (text copied raw from page complete with minor translation errors):
‘Software development need not be worried. Addition to our skilled and experienced programmers, we will receive hand-in-glove cooperation and support from Microsoft, and training as well. Some of these are not free, but we will not hesitate for a second if it’s necessary and even if it costs a million yuan [Ed's note: that's about 65,000UKP].
Hardware wise, you just have to worry even less. The developer of the main chip is someone we have had solid cooperation with for long, RF as well. And the display has been tailored and modelled.’
If these comments are genuine, then of particular note is the section about Microsoft’s involvement. WinCE would very likely form the basis of the Redmond giant’s recently rumoured Zune-branded phone (as it does for the Zune music player), and using the M8 handset as an indirect feasibility study would be very much in keeping with Microsoft’s past practices.
