Phones for Health

GSM associationUsing mobile technology to improve people’s well-being, rather than offering the opportunity to download (more?) porn clips, is an idea that we at Pocket Picks roundly applaud.

So the new $10m (£5m-ish) ‘Phones for Health’ programme announced by the GSM Association’s Development Fund, in partnership with the U.S. President’s Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief (PEPFAR), Accenture Development Partnerships, Motorola, MTN and Voxiva (got all that?) is an interesting initiative. Initially focused on 10 African countries, and building on a trial deployment in Rwanda, the system will allow health workers in the field to use a Motorola handset to enter and share health data.

“Health workers will also be able to use the system to order medicine, send alerts, download treatment guidelines, training materials and access other appropriate information,” said Paul Meyer, Chairman of Voxiva, the company that has designed the software.

Nice work, Voxiva people. To read the full details of the announcement, click here.
