iPhone set for 11th June in US?

iphone home 100pxAccording to CNET, a sales representative from Cingular (aka, ‘the new AT&T’ to all you American Idol fans out there) has let slip to them that the iPhone is set to launch on 11th June in the US. There wouldn’t normally be a lot of weight leant to such tales, were the date not also the first day of Apple’s Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC), a major event in the fruity computer maker’s year. So the 11th does seem like a good candidate for an iPhone US street date.

Before you ask, there is still no word on a European date for iPhone, but we wouldn’t be overly surprised if Apple CEO Steve Jobs was planning to announce that at WWDC too.

Vodafone set to give Vodafone Live a Googly revamp

At least, that’s the report coming out of the operator’s analyst day yesterday, in which Vodafone’s UK CEO Nick Read said that Google will be revamping Vodafone Live, making it more of an open-internet portal. Apparently MySpace, YouTube and eBay will all have a presence on the portal’s homepage, following their deals with Vodafone earlier this year. Read also said that Vodafone will introduce a new flat-rate data tariff to ensure that users don’t get stung for data charges while surfing these services too.

Yoga goes mobile

mobileyoga.jpg£21.49 for a mobile application?! It’d have to make me fit as a fiddle and bolster my essential feelings of oneness with the world for that kind of cash. Which is lucky, as that’s exactly the goal behind Hala Soft’s Mobile Yoga app. It provides instructions on all manner of Yoga positions, with its mobile nature meaning you can whip it out whenever you fancy a quick stretch. Whether you can still operate your phone with your legs behind your ears is another story…

Twitter: the next big Mobile 2.0 craze

twitter.jpgThe Web 2.0 world is constantly looking for the Next Big Thing – see how the social networking hype moved from Friendster to MySpace to Bebo to Piczo to Facebook, for example (don’t worry if you’re still at step two – it’s the cool kids who drive these things).

Anyway, Twitter is the latest hype, and it is quite cool. It’s a stripped-down service where you sign up a bunch of friends, then whenever you feel like it, type in a 140-character update on what you’re doing, which is then broadcast to them. It’s like a cross between RSS and instant messaging.

What’s the mobile angle? Well, you can set it up so that new updates from your friends are sent to you as text messages. You can even set it to only send these SMS updates between certain hours (good if you keep your phone on while sleeping). Have a look, and let us know what you think!

BBC shows coming to 3G mobiles

BBC TV trialDoctor Who-ooh, Doctor Who! The BBC has announced it has done a deal with Orange, 3 and Vodafone to trial streaming some of its channels to their mobile TV services. With the exception of some sport and licensed content (insert name of your favourite US TV show here), BBC One, BBC Three and BBC News 24 will be available within the month. That’s right, folks, by the end of April.

In addition, up to eight radio channels, including Radios 1 to 4, 1Xtra, 6 Music and Asian Network, will be also on offer. Additionally, the Beeb has revamped bbc.co.uk/mobile, which is available to all phones with XHTML browsers. The WAP & PDA versions of the BBC site received a massive 84 million page views in January ‘07, and the BBC only expects that to rise - hence this massive expansion of services.

Motorola backs location-aware

Motorola logoIn a bid to boost development of location-enabled/ location-aware apps for its handsets, Motorola has announced its new Location Services Framework. The system is designed to allow developers to more easily link-up the info that’s available on and to your phone.

Motorola puts it as, ‘From mobile search, messaging, contacts, and the mobile browser to social networking applications and the calendar, the platform intuitively facilitates actionable connections between content and the locations associated with them.’

So look forward to your next Moto phone having an interactive map which displays all your nearby contacts and tells you what they’re doing right now according to their calendars. Er, maybe.

Microsoft developing new Deepfish mobile browser

deepfish.jpgIt’s not even in beta yet, so don’t expect to be using Microsoft’s new Deepfish browser tomorrow. It’s being developed for Windows Mobile smartphones, with the aim of providing a browsing experience much closer to what you’d get on a desktop computer.

This will involve more use of zooming and panning to move around pages, while a server renders web pages into something that’ll load quickly on your phone. It’s being developed by Microsoft’s Live Labs division, so we’ll keep you posted when it becomes available to download.

Bebo goes mobile with Orange – it’s official

bebo1.jpgWe wrote about this the other day when it was just a rumour, but Orange confirmed yesterday that it has signed an exclusive deal with social networking site Bebo to create a mobile version. The exclusivity lasts for a few months – Orange hasn’t said how long exactly – and will allow users to edit their profiles and receive alerts from friends, among other features. There’ll also be a special club for Bebo users on Orange giving access to film and gig tickets. The mobile version is due to launch this summer, going head to head with Vodafone’s MySpace Mobile, which is under a similar exclusive deal.
