The Web 2.0 world is constantly looking for the Next Big Thing – see how the social networking hype moved from Friendster to MySpace to Bebo to Piczo to Facebook, for example (don’t worry if you’re still at step two – it’s the cool kids who drive these things).
Anyway, Twitter is the latest hype, and it is quite cool. It’s a stripped-down service where you sign up a bunch of friends, then whenever you feel like it, type in a 140-character update on what you’re doing, which is then broadcast to them. It’s like a cross between RSS and instant messaging.
What’s the mobile angle? Well, you can set it up so that new updates from your friends are sent to you as text messages. You can even set it to only send these SMS updates between certain hours (good if you keep your phone on while sleeping). Have a look, and let us know what you think!

Hey Stuart,
There are some cool mobile apps floating around for Twitter, such as Tiny Twitter and even a Flash based tool which I wrote about on my site.
Hopefully there will be more.
Most competent mobile app for Twitter must be Jargong (http://www.jargong.com) though. Handles updates and friends and global timelines. The applicatino can do a lot of other things as well.
Hey Darla and Peter,
Thanks for the info on those, I’m going to have a look at them all, they sound really intriguing.
