Palm switches to Linux-based OS

Palm LinuxYep, after years spent carving out its own operating system path, Palm announced yesterday at its Analysts Day that it is to commence the switch to a Linux-based OS. The change is due to happen before the end of the year, with Palm CEO Ed Colligan stating that the new OS will be better able to handle simultaneous voice and data, and should also deliver a better web browsing experience. Rumblings of a new wi-fi device were also heard.

Coupled with last month’s news that Palm has hired a well-known former Apple interface designer, it seems that it is gearing up for fresh competition from the iPhone - despite Palm’s claims that their products address different markets.

However, any further mention of the rumoured Palm takeover bids was not forthcoming… So we’ll just have to wait and see how that situation develops.
