Motorola yesterday announced that sales of its mobile devices were down 15% year-on-year for Q1 of 2007. In money terms, the mobile division lost $231m (£115m). Ouch.
To be honest, we’re not surprised. Motorola needs more exciting products, like the Z8 shown here (plus an interface revamp) to regain its momentum. But when you look at the way Motorola plans to get out of its rut:
- Streamlining the product portfolio
- Carry out workforce reduction initiatives
- Further utilising alternate source silicon providers
- Introduce more devices based on Linux/ Java
- Rationalizing product pricing and distribution
Nowhere does that list scream, ‘Make some more exciting, well-designed handsets’. Which - along with hiring some new interface designers - is exactly what it needs to do, we think.
