Irish teens texting themselves stupid?

Irish phoneMad4Mobiles yesterday picked up a story about falling rates of literacy among Irish teenagers, with the Irish State Examination Commission blaming the problem on the massive numbers of texts some kids send.

According to the Irish Times, the report said that, ‘The emergence of the mobile phone and the rise of text messaging as a popular means of communication would appear to have impacted on standards of writing as evidenced in the responses of candidates.’ Ah, the rich irony of someone using vacuous business-speak like ‘impacted’ when criticising others’ ability to write.

Anyway, today’s Irish Times now reports that teaching unions are leaping to the defence of the humble SMS, while one school in County Meath is actually using text messaging to let parents know when their kids have gone hooky. Pah, text messages. Bring back the cane, that’ll get ‘em in line.

They should send some German teachers [link to Textually] over to Ireland, just to mix things up a bit more.
