iPhone weekend round-up: memory, movies and music

iPhone coldplayHere’s a quick round-up of some of the latest iPhone-related stories on the web right now:

AppleInsider has picked up a DigiTimes story that Apple is asking Samsung to supply around 10 to 15% more 4GB flash memory NAND chips this year than previous requested - some 400 to 500 million pieces. As well as the iPhone, the next full-size iPod (which is based on the iPhone interface) is rumoured to use all-flash memory, meaning that Apple will need all the NAND it can get its hands on this year.

Meanwhile, ahead of the widescreen iPhone hitting Europe, Loop Rumors reports that Apple is planning to finally start selling movies through iTunes in the territory, something which has been long overdue happening.

MacRumors notes that Apple has also notified its music partners that they will be able to join EMI in selling DRM-free music over iTunes from next month. Is the music DRM dam about to burst?

Lastly, MacRumors also picks up on an Arstechnica interview with Dan Glickman of the MPAA (Motion Picture Association of America), who is opening up to the idea of allowing we punters to legally rip our DVDs to use on iPods, iPhones and other devices - so long as some kind of DRM system is retained - which is just confusing and pointless, we say.

Does anybody know which devices kill bees?

bumble-bee-man.jpgJust a quick note to any of our readers that happen to be bee keepers or even just bee sympathisers who read our piece about the harmful effects of mobiles on bee populations to say don’t throw away your handsets just yet.

It turns out that mobiles don’t necessarily kill bees after all. Cordless DECT landline phones might however, although the debate about the harmful effects of wi-fi and 3G masts and devices, as well as mobiles still seems to be fairly contentious. Essentially different studies have produced different results and none of the top bee scientists can agree on the whole ‘harmful effects of micro wave wireless technology’ debate yet.

Flexible screens heading to mobiles?

intel-flexible-screen.jpg

As children, watching Back to the Future II, every child of the eighties was absolutely convinced that by the time they reached adult hood, everyone would be driving flying cars and wearing tin foil. Alas that day has not yet come (incidentally BTTF II was set in 2015 so we still have a few years left to realise Robert Zemeckis’ vision of the future), but this latest patent reveals details of a new technology that is more exciting than ten hoverboards combined.

Flexible displays have been a topic of hushed discussion for a good long while now but a patent from Intel suggests that they may be just around the corner. The patent includes detailed info about how the technology will work. Hit the jump for the science bit.

VoIP to Fring call charges out the window?

pict_prod_discript.jpg

The popular VoIP software that has been around on computers for years has now made its way mobileward, meaning that if you have an unlimited data plan then you could conceivably stop paying for calls altogether.

Enter Fring; Fring utilizes a mobile internet connection in order to make mobile to mobile, mobile to landline or mobile to PC calls. If your handset is 3G or wi-fi enabled then the clever Fring software will help you navigate chat clients such as Google Talk, MSN Messenger and Skype. Everything is in real time so you will be able to see whether your contacts are available for calls and the best thing is that bar making calls to landlines, the whole process is completely free.

If Fring or any similar software takes off (assuming the carriers don’t manage to stop them), then the mobile market could be in for a bit of a global shake up. With wi-fi nearing blanket coverage in most built up areas, VoIP software could swagger into the mobile party and plonk its free culture bum right down in the middle of the dance floor.

More on this, with better analogies, when we have it.

LG’s cool new touch-screen patents

LG patents 1LG is clearly not resting on its laurels after the success of its svelte Prada handset, as these recently un-earthed patent applications show. First of the two interesting ideas (marked here with ‘A’) is a twin touch-screen interface (a little like the recent Pantech twin-screener), which can be used either as independent or inter-related screens - similar to the Nintendo DS games console.

Perhaps more exciting is LG’s concept for a moving icon interface (’B'), where fish are used as a visual metaphor for the idea that icons can react to your input on screen. Tapping a new SMS, for instance, could cause a fish to swim over and ’swallow’ it, spawning a range of new fish-shaped options. Click below to see the full range of patent drawings.

$240 for Vuitton decorative phone dice

Vuitton diceOkay, here’s something we just don’t get: $240 (£120) for a pair of decorative dice to attach to your mobile phone. Let’s face it, if you saw these down the market you might give five quid for them as a jokey present for your girlfriend (or boyfriend; we’re not biased). Slap a Louis Vuitton logo on the side, call them the ‘Monogram Infusion’, dangle a couple of Swarovski crystals in the chain, and suddenly you’re looking at £120. Ker-ching!

Now, what were just saying about taking care not to flash your cash when you’re out and about…?

Wakefield phone retailer knifed in attempted robbery

Wakefield stabbingWe’re sad to report the story of one Andy Wilson, owner of Chatterbox phones in Wakefield, West Yorkshire, who was recently attacked with an 8″ kitchen knife in an attempted robbery. A man in his 20s had entered Wilson’s shop earlier in the day, asking to see a ‘Nokia NG’. He returned later with the knife and carried out his attack.

Wilson, thankfully, survived the attack - despite losing a large amount of blood - and was able to give the police an accurate description of his attacker. The police have now detained a man fitting the description and charged him with attempted robbery.

We’re guessing that Wilson’s attacker was hoping to steal a Nokia N95, or similar, which goes to show how hot the Nseries has become. We don’t want to add to the 21st Century’s media paranoia but care out there when you’re using your shiny new handsets.

Cingular smartphones sales drop ahead of iPhone

iPhone musicAppleInsider reports that sales of smartphones by US iPhone carrier Cingular are slowing ahead of the June launch of iPhone. Customers appear to be choosing to delay upgrading in order to bag Apple’s hot new handset. In Europe, however, Nokia’s N95 is doing well, with the iPhone too distant a prospect to really affect sales - although we’re sure a few European Apple fans are already contemplating their iPhone purchase with foam-flecked lips.

In other news, one analyst has upgraded the predicted price of Apple shares to $140 (they’re currently around $100), based on the upcoming iPhone, the new version of the Mac OS, and the (much-needed) refresh to the Mac computer line-up that’s coming soon. Oh, and the iPhone-a-like wi-fi, widescreen iPod that’s due before the end of ‘07.

Five new Sony Ericssons rumoured for 8th May

New Sonys AprilThe Esato forums, source of the recent Sony Ericsson P700i leak, have been updated with the information that up to five new SE phones are going to be announced on 8th May. Possible appearances are said to include a ‘W999′ (shown here, left) and a ‘S500′ (that would be the other one). Notable is the shift to a black/ silver/ green colour combo for both handsets.

The ‘S’ tag is rumoured to make an appearance for a new range of slider phones, starting with this S500. The five handsets thought to include a high-end Walkman, a couple of business-oriented phones, plus a lower-end device. We’ll be here a week-on-Tuesday to let you know how accurate the Esato guesses turn out to be.

Sony T610 battery explodes?

Sony T610 batteryComing after the well-publicised problems with its laptop batteries, (if it’s real) this could be a problem that Sony will not want to hear about. A Czech mobile website has just published a string of pictures which appear to show a Sony T610 with its battery burnt-out.

Our Czech being non-existent, we can’t tell how this started - whether it’s induced or otherwise - but there have been no reported cases of other T610s having this problem. Are there any Czech readers out there able to enlighten us…? The site looks pretty professional, so we’d be interested to learn more about this.
