Kodak’s new five-megapixel sensor for Motorola

Kodak logoYep, it’s definitely happening: the digital camera business is backing down from the onslaught of new cameraphones. Kodak has announced that it is quitting the low-end digital camera business and instead developing its own five-megapixel CMOS sensor which it will be selling to Motorola.

Word is that there may be a Motorola-Kodak branded five-megapixel cameraphone due before the end of 2007 — which is exactly the kind of cross-branding that makes sense for anyone apart from the biggest players in the digital camera world. In related news, Panasonic has just announced a 12-megapixel digital camera, which shows just how far upscale the camera business is now being pushed.
