Apple puts iPhone manual online

manual.jpgA 124-page PDF guide to the workings of the iPhone is now available straight off the Apple website. We’ve just skim read it looking for a world exclusive revelation, but unfortunately it’s as boring as any other User Guide. Of course, true geeks never read the manual. Unless they can’t buy the product, in which case they put their feet up with it and crack open a beer.

iPhone ripped apart in name of progress

iPhoneUnplugged.jpgThe lab rats at ifixit have taken their new iPhone to pieces to reveal superior engineering to the iPod. The techies suggest that:

One has to imagine that Apple was extra-paranoid about reliability on this phone. They’ve certainly learned their lessons from the iPod.

Besides pronouncing the iPhone battery ‘huge’, there’s no surprises inside the case for mere mortals, but if you like techno porn you might click through to see the iPhone getting undressed. (Note, this link goes to the site’s ‘live stream’, as no permalink is available, and so might die in the next few days).

Don’t get too excited though, as the bust-up drew the line at the intimate details of the logic board, with the boffins admitting, “We haven’t yet found a way to pry the two sections apart without damaging the logic board, so it’s virtually impossible to tell you what’s in there.” The teases!

New Finger Tips iPhone instructional video

Apple posted a new instructional video on its site today called “Finger Tips” which demonstrates 10 tips for the iPhone including simple stuff like silencing the ringer to more involved functions such as how to reset your iPhone. Although not terribly exciting, the video does give a real sense of just how dextrous the iPhone is; check out the full video below.

New version of iTunes rolls out alongside the iPhone

itunes73.gif

A new iPhone friendly version of iTunes, iTunes 7.3, has been launched today alongside the must have device. So far we don’t know whether the new version includes any cool iPhone specific stuff because, well, we don’t have an iPhone yet but it looks as though for the meantime the update merely adds support so that those who own an iPhone can get cracking with some downloads.

iPhone officially launched in the US

applecrowd1.jpgThe time is about 11 minutes past the hour of 1 in the morning and normally Pocket Picks would be resting up and dreaming about gadgets but not today. It is official, the iPhone has been launched and there are people out there who actually have one in their possession the lucky beggars.

There have been hands on reviews and unboxings from launch attendees at Apple Insider and Mac Rumours already, each going into minute detail of every nook and cranny of the device. Due to the time difference and the fact that everyone who has managed to lay their hands on an iPhone has been far too busy fawning over it to report any interesting happenings from the actual in store event, details have been hard to come by.

Needless to say, as soon as we know anything more we will post it here. In the meantime you can console/torture yourself with these images courtesy of Apple Insider contained after the jump.

First pictures of the Apple iPhone

iphoneshotstop.jpgEngadget has some of the first hands-on and unboxed pictures of the Apple iPhone. Pop along here and see its gallery. As always, it looks like Apple has gone to town with the packaging. Can’t believe us Brits have to wait until the end of the year to get our hands on one.

Still if you’re feeling particularly desperate to own one, why not pop along to eBay and try your luck on the online auction merry-go-round. It’s been flooded with iPhones already — which of course won’t work in the UK so you’d be wasting your money. One eBayer here is asking $2100 (£1050) to ‘buy now’ the 8GB model, while bidding starts at $900 (£450). Or you could just wait and pay the normal $499/ $599 (£250/ £300) when Apple restocks…

Apple to announce 3G UK version of iPhone on Monday?

iPhone gallery update 2

Can it be true? As the US gears up for the official iPhone launch tonight, Newswireless is reporting that Apple will announce a 3G European version of the iPhone on Monday — which fits with the story we ran a month ago about a new iPhone model going into production this September. It’s also rumoured that Vodafone, T-Mobile in Germany and Carphone Warehouse will be involved in a joint promotion. T-Mobile and Vodafone… Really?

Although a number of Euro operators have been bandied about as iPhone partners, including Orange and T-Mobile, rumours of Vodafone’s involvement have gained more momentum. Apparently, Vodafone has been chosen by Apple partly because its 3G network is under-used, and to see the iPhone’s Safari web browser in its best light you ideally have to have a high-speed connection. In the US, where free wi-fi hotspots are often found, relying on wi-fi for net access makes more sense, but in Europe 3G is a more available and appealing option.

Girl is spotted in the queue for the iPhone!

What a shocker! Girls like technology! Who’d have Adam and Eve’d it! It seems Shiny Media spotted the only girl in the queue for the iPhone at the Apple Store in New York. The interview’s went up on YouTube and it has to be said that Marie from Brooklyn looks distinctly non-plussed about the whole affair. We gather she’s right at the end of the blockbusting queue, so it looks like she’s going back to Brooklyn empty handed. Unlucky.

Skype gives Nokia’s N800 some love

skype_on_nokia_n800.jpgAccording to reports from the recent Digital Experience Show, Skype is finally coming to the Nokia N800 internet tablet (hip hip hooray!). That’s the great news, the good news is that the software will be made available in July. The bad news is that unfortunately the release won’t support the N800’s integrated web-cam for video calls.

Hopefully the boffins at Skype will add this in a future firmware so that we can all go VoIP crazy. Now all we need is a standalone version of Skype on Symbian for all of us who are not lucky enough to own the sexy N800 internet tablet (oh the envy).

Photo print service for Nokia Nseries phones

Nokia_Mobile_Printing_Service_N95.jpgRight, admit it — most of us store our snaps on our handset or pointlessly hoard them on our PC. Still, Nokia is trying to encourage us to print our snaps with its new mobile printing service for Nseries devices: XpressPrint.

If you happen to own an Nseries phone you can order prints direct from your mobile (or via a wi-fi connection) and then get them delivered to your desired address. This service is accessible straight from your phone’s Gallery section and it looks likely payment will be via credit card. Oh, this could go so wrong if your phone fell into the wrong hands in the pub…

Future Nseries handsets will have this XpressPrint app pre-loaded but current owners of Nokia’s ‘multimedia computers’ can still download the app for free here.
