Willcom to Toshiba’s latest

Carrots

‘Willcom’ has always seemed to us to be an odd choice of name, even for a Japanese phone provider. Perhaps it’s a clever pun on the English word ‘welcome’ (in which case it’s too clever for us), or maybe the president of the company is called Will-san. Who knows? We tried to reach Will-san for comment but, mysteriously, he wasn’t available. The plot thickens…

Anyway, that handset up there is one of Willcom’s, and it’s being produced by Toshiba. The WX320T, as it’s known in these parts, seems to have everything a thirtysomething business-type could want without getting into the office-grey territory of phones with little keyboards running Windows Mobile. In fact, this release marks the revival of a mobile OS called Carrots (yes), which last appeared inside Japanese phones six years ago.

Of course, it’s been updated: The WX320T enables users to view Word, Excel, Powerpoint (ooh, lovely) and PDF documents. And thanks to the wonders of Netfront v3.4, it features full-on PC site browsing capability. Best of all, it has battery-life of seven-and-a-half hours per charge. Which is almost long enough for the average working day of Japanese users. The WX320T launches here, in the land of Willcom, next month.
