Big Brother is watching you, at least if you’re a phone operator. What’s more, it seems Endemol – the company that brought us the defining humans-as-lab-rats reality TV show – isn’t happy with what it sees.
According to news site Unstrung, reporting from Monte Carlo where Endemol’s CEO Peter Bazalgette was speaking at a mobile industry event, two years ago he thought mobile phones were “the perfect place to put content”. But not any more:
“[...] the broadband Internet is overtaking the mobile industry because a dynamic model is evolving that combines advertising with content.”
Mostly importantly, Bazalgette says, mobile operators need to move faster to an open network model, rather than the ‘on-portal’ or ‘walled garden’ approach. Mobile entertainment “won’t happen unless the mobile industry opens up. It’s hindering the market,” says Bazalgette. “Also, there is no price transparency.”
Still, don’t despair. Endemol has developed 10 of its TV shows for mobile distribution, of which Big Brother is top for getting us to download video clips. But Bazalgette says his company wants to be pushing some 200 to 400 properties onto mobile in the future.
