Another day, another BREW phone

brew-sign_11.jpgOK, so after our LA sojourn, we’re now in San Diego, Qualcomm country. The shockingly nice LG VX9400 has been reluctantly returned - the MediaFLO mobile TV service doesn’t work yet here as a local TV station is still using the UHF channel - and replaced with a still acceptable Verizon LG VX8600.

It’s V CAST capabilities came in mighty handy during our three hour plus stint at the local baseball game, in which the SD Padres finally overcame a lacklustre Baltimore, even though for the first 90 minutes of the game the most interesting thing to happen was when one guy’s bat broken in half.

Big movie tie-in games were top on the ‘stop boredom’s menu. Both Transformers and Live Free or Die Hard take the 2D platforming style but with very different results. I mean, why would you want to transform into a truck in a platformer? On the other hand, the in-game John McClane has an agility, his real-life impersonator might be somewhat jealous of. Yes, so far at least, Live Free or Die Hard plays mighty fun, if dumb, violent, and requiring certain button dexterity.

V CAST On Demand video service was less enjoyable though. Clips are organised into the usual news, music, sports, kids, comedy etc categories, but they cost around $3 and the quality wasn’t anything like as good as the MediaFLO live TV, although the amount of videos available is huge, especially in the music category. Thankfuly, by that stage the Padres decided to get their game in gear resulting in some more exciting closing innings.

And anyhow, there won’t be any time for time wasting from now on. BREW 2007 kicks off this afternoon but before then, it’s a tour of Qualcomm HQ and a heads up with CEO Paul Jacobs. Woowee zoowee!
