Peter Mercier appointed as new BBC Worldwide mobile chief

Peter_Mercier.jpgBBC Worldwide has just appointed Peter Mercier as its new head of mobile. Former director of business development at MobiTV Europe, Mercier will now lead a strategy at the BBC to bring popular BBC shows such as Little Britain, Doctor Who and Top Gear to mobiles via deals with 3 and Orange in the UK and other carriers internationally.

Based in London, Mercier will report to BBC Worldwide Digital Media head honcho, Simon Danker who is confident about the BBC’s continued push into the mobile space:

Mobile is clearly a huge opportunity for a major rights owner and international broadcaster like ourselves. Both the domestic and international markets are hungry for quality content and we can satisfy that hunger with some of the world’s best known and loved content brands.

It seems that none of the big hitters want to left out of the mobile TV party, no matter how slow mobile users are to embrace it.
