T’was the night before Christmas…

iphone keyboard‘And all through the house, not a creature was stirring, not even a mouse.’

We’re not sure that Major Henry Livingston Jr. had consumer electronics launches in mind when he wrote those classic lines, but that’s how it feels this week, as we close-in on the US launch of iPhone.

Regular readers will have noticed that this week has been overloaded with iPhone news, but that’s partly due to the clever drip-drip way that Apple has released new information related to the launch, and partly due to hungry newshounds in the US picking up every scent of a story that wafts their way.

Engadget has even gone so far as to offer iPhone-free RSS feeds for those sick of hearing about Apple’s handset. But we think that’s a step too far; this is clearly one of the most important devices the world has seen in a long time, not because of what it does but because of how it does it.

Nokia, Sony, LG and the rest have been quiet this week: quiet because Apple’s PR effort has been so strong, quiet because of the roar of public anticipation, and quiet because they, like the rest of the world, are watching to see whether Apple pulls it off.

Meanwhile, Apple just released another preview video (image on right), showing how the keyboard works — click here to view.
