Nokia signs VibeTonz deal with Immersion

limmogo.gifMost gadget gurus are all in a tizz over the iPhone’s gorgeous touch screen interface at the moment, but where to from here? Touch screens that touch you back of course. We covered Immersion’s VibeTonz tech back in January when it appeared on the Samsung SCH-W559 and now Nokia has licensed the VibeTonz software development platform for its handsets.

VibeTonz works by giving mild vibrating feedback on touch screens to help make the onscreen buttons feel more like physical ones. Given Nokia’s market presence, it could be that the Vibetonz tech could finally have found the platform and reach it needs to really stretch its legs.

“This license with Nokia supports the potential for very widespread use of our VibeTonz System — and the VibeTonz System supports the potential for a much fuller, more multisensory experience for users,” said Immersion CEO Victor Viegas. “With VibeTonz technology, Nokia can very purposefully access the sense of touch and add value throughout the mobile device.”
