Omnifone ‘close to deal with UK retailer’ for MusicStation

MusicStation K800i .jpgOmnifone has confirmed it will launch its MusicStation service here in the UK before Christmas and that it is in ‘the final stages of negotiations with a major UK phone retailer’.

MusicStation, already launched in Sweden, will offer unlimited mobile music downloads and playbacks for a fixed weekly fee of £1.99. Omnifone claims the service will be compatible with over 75% of today’s music phones. It already has agreements with Universal Music Group, Sony BMG Music Entertainment, EMI Music and Warner Music International, apparently signed with the UK market in mind.

Speculation on the most likely UK partner has focused on The Carphone Warehouse, but this week Omnifone CEO Rob Lewis was remaining tight-lipped. ‘We can confirm we will bring it [MusicStation] to the UK soon, well before Christmas,’ he said.

‘In common with our rollouts all over Europe we will only identify the rollout partner for MusicStation the day before handsets are available in-store for consumers to buy. Detailed UK rollout plans therefore remain confidential until then.’

So for the moment, Carphone remains a rumour, albeit a very strong rumour.
