DoCoMo begins ‘Super 3G’ experiments

Super 3GJapan’s NTT DoCoMo has announced that, as of this month, it will begin experimenting with 3.9G mobile networks. As part of NTT’s “Long Term Evolution” concept, 3.9G — which NTT is also dubbing as ‘Super 3G’ — will kick into action before the eventual roll-out of 4G.

For now, and on through until 2009, Super 3G will be rigorously tested (at least we assume that NTT will be rigorous) and researched, with its widescale introduction pencilled in for the ‘Space Year’ 2010.

The sci-fi-ness of all this is further amplified by the data transfer speeds NTT is reported to have achieved with 3.9G: 300Mbps download rates and upload speeds of 80Mbps. Even when compared with NTT’s 3.5G service, which moves at an average of 14Mbps on the down and 5.4Mbps on the up, the increase is phenomenal. The future is (almost) now.
