Despite the arrival of some smart new handsets such as the Z8 (shown right), Motorola’s mobile division incurred heavy losses of $264 million (£132m) as year-on-year sales slumped 40% in the last quarter. Ouch.
Although Motorola continues to have a strong market presence in the US, and has recently shipped its 100 millionth RAZR handset, it needs to follow-up the Linux-based Z8 and RAZR2 with further exciting phones. In the face of Sony Ericsson’s flashy Walkmans and Cyber-shots, and Nokia’s ever-expanding Nseries, dribbling out a couple of new handsets is unlikely to form the basis for Motorola’s return to massmarket success.
