T-Mobile close to unveiling MDA Vario III smartphone with built-in GPS

T-Mobile Vario III.jpgThose gadget connoisseurs over at Pocket Lint have reported here that T-Mobile is set to introduce its third instalment in its MDA Vario smartphone range. The new smartie looks similar in design to its predecessor but its features have been considerably boosted.

The MDA Vario III is now powered by the latest Windows Mobile 6 OS, sprints to the next generation 3.6Mbps HSDPA speeds and most noticeably packs built-in GPS. Like with the MDA Compact III we expect the latest Co-Pilot Live sat nav software will be bundled with the device.

More curiously the story mentions ‘tilting touch-screen’ technology that enhances the internet browsing experience by rendering website in all its full HTML splendour. We’re not sure what his ‘tilting’ feature involves but once T-Mobile officially releases the info, along with pricing and availability, you’ll be the first to know.

Any ideas on T-Mobile’s actual release date? Any thoughts on whether to go for the Vario 2 now or whether to wait instead for the Vario 3?

doesent the vario 2 have a windows 6 upgrade so is there any point in getting this accept for the added features.

Just so you know, it’s the HTC TYTN II (T Mobile have just rebranded it). They’ve released their own press release with all the features and it will be available to buy at the beginning of September 2007. Expect Vodaphone, T-Mobile and Orange to follow with their rebranded models (of which T Mobile give the Vario III) sometime later in the month.

“doesent the vario 2 have a windows 6 upgrade so is there any point in getting this accept for the added features.”

….Hmmm the answer is in your question.

The added features : GPS, faster on board RAM, the ability to take SDHC up to 4gb maybe 8gb of memory,

I find WM6 is alot more stable after i upgraded my XDA Orbit but I will still be getting one of these for the “added features”

so far the Vario 3 is the best phone i’ve ever owned, but i have to say i loose the HSPA signal a little too often and can i hell work out how to get tomtom on to the thing - it simply will not instal and there is ZERO support for the handset online or anywhere else.

HTC & TomTom need to get there arse into gear to support TomTom users a little better, afterall what use is a built in GPS if you cant get the bloody thing working because you cant instal the software to use it.

Also, I know that HTC supply the TyYN II with TomTas standard but it seems that T-Mobile have decided not to follow them with this - Why?

I have a vario III with TOM Tom Navigator 6 loaded on micro sd card, but can’t work out how to get it talking to the inbuilt gps receiver. Paul says it opens through comm 4, but I can’t work out how to get this open? Anyone help?
    Thanks

  21. 21 Tony R

Well, I’m certainly no expert, but I’ve got Tom Tom Navigator 6 loaded on my SD Card. All I did was to select “other” GPS (i.e. not Bluetooth). Set it to Comm 4 and it seems to be working fine.

    The steps were:
    Change Preferences
    Show GPS status
    Configure
    Select “Other NMEA GPS receiver”
    Select Baud rate
    Select Comm 4
    Select Done
    and that was it!

No more separate portable GPS units for me!

    Good Luck
