It’s time again to stop worrying about which handset to buy next and which operators allow mobile VoIP and pay a visit to our sister site, Pocket Gamer, to indulge in some good old-fashioned play-time with this week’s mobile games round-up.
Powering onto mobiles with its metal caterpillar tracks, Tank Raid provided some 3D on rails shooting gallery thrills giving the week a strong start with 7 out of 10.
The Simpsons: Minutes to Meltdown didn’t fare so well. The combination of a near non-existent lifespan and gameplay that is both buggy and far too easy amounted to little more than a squandered license and as such, Minutes to Meltdown was awarded 4 out of 10.
Thank goodness then for Super Pac Man who saved the day with a well crafted remake of the arcade classic. The pill popping, ghost thwarting, gaming champ snaffled a well deserved 8 out of 10. Surf’s Up sustained the quality bar with its licensed platforming action; chicken flying, walrus pounding and ice surfing can only mean one thing - an effortless 8 out of 10.
From there things moved from sea and surf to sand. Unfortunately Beach Volleyball Smashdown was about as much fun to play with as a deflated beach ball on a rainy day at Scunthorpe seaside, earning it this week’s lowest score at 3 out of 10.
Things improved dramatically however, when RealArcade Puzzle Pack came along stuffing two great puzzle offerings, Gem Drop and PileUp!, in to a single two for the price of one offering. With both top notch quality and value on its side, RealArcade Puzzle Pack bagged 8 out of 10.
Last of the bunch was the amusingly named Governator 2 (think Governor of California) which despite having good looks, disappointed due to poor level design, poor controls and a badly pitched difficulty level leaving it with an average 5 out of 10.
That’s it for this week’s mobile games round-up. With the rapid growth of the mobile games industry, titles are flooding the Pocket Gamer offices thick and fast so check back next week for another quickfire round of abridged mobile gaming appraisal.
