A Finnish company with only 12 employees called Concilio Networks is hatching a grand scheme to permanently change the mobile communications industry using, yes you guessed it, mobile VoIP.
What sets Concilio apart from other companies with mobile VoIP ambitions is their plan to allow any VoIP provider to connect to GSM-based cell phones through their Mobile Gateway Suite. Essentially this means that all 2G/3G mobile handsets, even ancient models, will be able to benefit from the service as it works by connecting 2G/3G circuit-switched Radio Access Networks (RAN) to the internet and hence VoIP networks.
The service also works with more modern WiFi capable handsets too and makes roaming between GSM/3G and WiFi networks less awkward by using standard GSM numbers without any bothersome dual numbering or client software
Certainly a novel idea and one that will no doubt be welcomed by the ever more vocal mobile VoIP contingent. Interestingly, Concilio was founded in 2002 by various Nokia veterans. Sounds promising to us.
