Doom and Quake maker id Software confirms it has people ‘looking at’ iPhone

iPhone DoomDuring a speech at his company’s QuakeCon 2007 event, John Carmack, famed lead programmer of genre-defining shoot ‘em ups Doom and Quake, revealed that he has people ‘looking at’ Apple’s iPhone.

Carmack has fallen head-over-heels in love with mobile gaming in recent times, having created Doom RPG for mobile phones (read more here). He has apparently been arguing with Apple CEO Steve Jobs that the iPhone should be an ‘open’ platform, in the same way that Nokia’s S60 is open to run anyone’s games or applications.

Apple’s assertion that the iPhone needs to be kept closed for security reasons didn’t wash with Carmack, as he made clear to his audience. But that aside, he also said he thought iPhone was “neat”, then revealed he has people looking at developing for it. So let the betting start here: will it be Doom RPG, Doom, Quake… Or something new entirely that’s on its way?

How can someone come on here and effectively say that we AND Gamasutra (one of the most-respected gaming sites in the world) are making this up?
