Apple seems to think intelligent touch-screens are the future of operating a mobile device but we’re still not convinced. Having used the HTC Touch smartphone with its TouchFLO platform, we quickly became irritated at its erractic response to fingertip strokes. Don’t get me wrong, the HTC Touch is very sleek, attractive, Windows Mobile-powered smartie but if usability is compromised you can forget it.
Perhaps HTC has taken some customer feedback on board (who knows?) because according to Unwired, the smartphone manufacturer is poised to roll out a Touch model with an auto sliding numbered keypad. Ah, at last some mechanised buttons to acknowledge our tender touch.
Anyway, its been christened the P5500 Nike and this is probably a working title, so although its design is almost identical to the Touch, it’s still not an official successor to the ticklish handset. The HTC P5500 Nike also arrives loaded with far more potent specs including HSDPA download speeds, built-in GPS, two-megapixel snapper and a 2.6-inch touch-sensitive display. We assume it will also run a Windows Mobile 6 OS while the front loaded camera lens suggests video calling capabilities. Talk is of a September release but nothing official has been announced.
