In a move sure to be unpopular with tweenies, March Ventures has released the OmegoMobile, the first handset giving parents full control over how their children use their mobile.
The OmegoMobile is controlled from a website, where parents can select what numbers can call the handset, what numbers can be dialled from the handset, and set times that the phone can be used via a secure online phone book.
The OmegoMobile is aimed at kids aged from 8-12 years old, and its sales pitch is that children can use their first mobile phone while parents can ensure they’re not getting calls and texts or content from ‘inappropriate sources’.
March Ventures says the handset is also designed to be ‘unappealing to thieves’ because only numbers programmed by parents can call and be called on them. It’s also unappealing in other ways — it’s certainly no ‘fashion phone’ and surely any wannabe-trendy kid won’t risk being ridiculed by whipping this out on the playground.
The OmegoMobile connects to ToucanMobile’s virtual network and it’s free when parents take out 18-month contracts at £15 a month for 100 units a month (one call minute or one text equals one unit).
