The web is ablaze today with ‘confirmation’ that O2 has won the UK contract for the Apple iPhone, with T-Mobile getting a German deal and Orange another in France.
Although the stories have come from a report in the Financial Times, it seems to be taken as fact and the news comes just days before an official announcement at the IFA trade show in Berlin later this month. We’ve been here before but with this news emerging so close to launch, it does seem quite likely.
Certainly the story has been given credence by the reference to an unusual move by the above operators in agreeing to hand 10% of any subscription fees and revenues from data services that are generated by users with the devices. With previous rumours mentioning the European operators’ anger at Apple’s perceived arrogance in demanding ongoing revenues in its negotiations, it seems the three operators have blinked first and agreed to Apple’s demands.
There’s no news on whether the European iPhones will have 3G capability, but there won’t be long to find out with Apple promising to start shipping iPhones to Europe in time for Christmas.
