After our short break from the mobile games round up last week (enforced by a certain German games conference) it’s time to take stock of the best and brightest mobile games that went under the thumbs of our sister site Pocket Gamer over the last two weeks.
Anyone not familiar with Breakout in name will almost certainly be aware of the concept (one of gaming’s earliest) which involves smashing a ball into bricks in order to make them disappear. It is one that Brick Breaker Revolution borrows from heavily and the addition of several twists to the formula as well as some lovely visuals gained this title 8 out of 10.
The first mobile outing for the Burnout franchise made its debut, proving to be a tightly focussed affair with a deft understanding of what can and can’t be done successfully on mobile for 8 out of 10.
As far as other racing titles went there was MotoGP 2007, which despite a slightly heavy handed difficulty bar secured a solid 7 out of 10 score for its rich and rewarding two wheeled racing action.
Two cricket titles, Michael Vaughan Cricket 07/08 and Flintoff’s Powerplay Cricket, also came to mobile. The first earned 7 out of 10 for its fan focussed play and the latter grabbing 8 out of 10 for its more accessible arcade cricketing thrills.
Pro Bowling 2 and World Poker 2: Texas Hold’Em (solo) headed up the, not really a sport, category each earning 7 out of 10. Pro Bowling 2 earned its spurs for its simple yet deep control method and World Poker 2: Texas Hold’Em (solo) for its solid design and good presentation.
For arcade lovers there was Asteroid Zone, a space shooter with plenty of upgrading and collecting features that was fun to play and well paced, grabbing 7 out of ten. The aviation theme continued with Mach: Air Combat, an enjoyable arcade battle racer with enough modes and collectables to warrant its 7 out of 10 mark.
The highlight of the last couple of weeks however has to be Critter Crunch. A high level of polish, variation and challenge set this quirky puzzler aside from the pack for a lofty 9 out of 10 and well deserved it is too.
That’s it for this week, check back next Monday for another (less tardy) mobile games round-up.
