Vodafone has announced that, beginning in early Q4 (about six weeks away hopefully) its mobile broadband service is to be cranked up to HSDPA spec, with speeds of up to 7.2Mbps — with the added bonus of HSUPA enabled upload speeds of up to 1.44Mbps. Note the use of the words ‘up to’, though, and you’ll need an HSDPA-compatible handset, of course.
Central London and main international airports will be the only areas of the UK to benefit from the service from day one. 3’s new 3Turbo HSDPA service is rolling out over a similar time period, but 3 is being more definite about its planned coverage, and will be offering it across the north of England.
The service shouldn’t come at any premium (other than the fact Vodafone’s data plans currently suck), so if you are a London-dwelling Vodafone customer it might be a good idea to harass Vodafone about a service upgrade when the time comes.
