iPhone-friendly EDGE connections start appearing on O2’s network

Oh bugger. The Register reports that EDGE (2.5G) mobile internet connections have started appearing on the O2 network. Does this mean the UK is about to get the same non-3G iPhone as in the States? We’ll find out after 10am (London time) today when Apple makes its first European iPhone-related announcement.

If we were among investors who’d seen O2 shell out £4b ($2b) for UK 3G network rights, we’d be rather peeved to hear that the company was rolling back to crap, old 2.5G in order to please Steve Jobs.
