Samsung G800 five-megapixel cameraphone: first official pics and specs

G800 1

It’s not often that we’ll show you the back of a new phone first, but with Samsung’s red-hot new SGH-G800 boasting a five-megapixel camera with 3x optical zoom, it seems the only place to start. As we hoped, the G800 also sports HSDPA as well as triband GSM. The display is a 2.4″ QVGA unit (no word on display colour depth yet, however).

Dimensions for the 129g G800 are 101.5 x 52 x 18.8mm, while on-board memory is 110MB plus the expected microSD card slot. Also included are of course Bluetooth and USB — we’re assuming both are 2.0 spec, and hopefully the the former will support stereo headsets.

Mostly, however, we’re incredibly excited about the new Samsung’s potential photographic capabilities. Cameraphone image quality seems ready to take a leap forward, thanks to the arrival of better lenses. There’s been recent talk of a new Sony Ericsson Cyber-shot phone with optical zoom coming in the new year… Watch this space for further developments, and check out more pictures of the G800 below.

Update: fresh pics of the G800 here.

Update Oct 25th: the G800 is now coming soon from T-Mobile.

  1. 1 Information please

    SEND OF TECH INFORMATION

  2. 2 Megan McGuigan

This phone is very very nice and seems reasonable, may you reply to me and possibly tell me the price of this phone please?

    Thankyou,
    Megan

  3. 3 Chris Leonard

    Hi Megan,

Bit early to tell at the moment, but chances are it’ll be free on a £30-£40 contract with whichever operator(s) take it on. Keep an eye on the site to keep up to date with developments

  4. 4 pio rymond

can anyone tell me when this mobile will get into market

  5. 5 Anonymous

middle of september i have been told by vodafone

  6. 6 jamie

iv been on the phone to vodafone and they have told me that the g800 will be released on the 17th of november………. but not sure weather there will be a charge for the phone on contract

  7. 7 georgia

this phone will be coming out on 19 November and will defiantly be on contract with vodafone!

  8. 8 Darren Evans

Have been told mid Nov, looking forward to it then I can ditch my camera as 5 mega-pixel is easy enaough for what I need.

  9. 9 N22 OzZy

ITS DEFIANTELY OUT IN NOVEMBER BUT ALL I CAN SUGGEST IS T-MOBILE IS OFFERING THIS PHONE ON CONTRACT AND IT WOULD PROBABLY BE CHEAPER ON T-MOBILE RATHER THAN ORANGE…..PROBABLY FREE ON THE FLEXT 35 WHICH OFFERS £180 ALLOWANCE EVERY MONTH, THATS 900 MINUTES A MONTH…..BUT TRUE SAY THE G600 LOOKS BETTER

  10. 10 G

Any Idea if this will be on Orange, Was thinking of getting teh Sony Ericsson K850i, but not sure now, any ideas?

  11. 11 Chris Leonard

Yep, it’s definitely on Orange. As if they’d pass up on the opportunity to sell this beauty!

  12. 12 G

I went into an Orange shop near me, and they said it would be out December, so if all rumours are true, Vodafone and T-mobile would have them out a month or atleast 2 weeks before Orange, not sure about O2 though…But I can upgrade now, so I will just wait a month and get this.

I usually dislike Samsungs as they all look the same, and I hated the camera being part of the slide with a flash that lights up the whole of London, but I have always wanted a slide phone, and this could be it ;-)

Any ideas if it takes a memory card, and if so which one? as I have a 1GB M2 for my SE and wouldn’t mind keeping it!

  13. 13 Kev

I’ve been due for an upgrade for quite a while now. The obvious successor from my D600 (great phone) appeared to be the G600, but I’ve heard just as many bad things as good things about it, so have decided to avoid it.

Now I hear on the grapevine about this G800… looks good. I hope so. Although it looks quite big compared to my D600?! (about 9mm taller, 7mm wider, and only about 3mm thinner).

Do we know for definite if it’ll come out mid-November?

  14. 14 Chris Leonard

The way this normally works is one or more operator/retailer will have an exclusive for a couple of weeks, maybe a month. The others will then follow later. In this case, it seems Vodafone and T-Mobile have the jump on their rivals, but almost certainly come the end December/start January, the G800 will appear on Orange and O2. You just have to be patient…

The Samsung G800 is back up to date with technology. I work in the mobile communications industry and I suspect it will be free on £35 a month or higher tariffs.

It has 160MB internal memory, the excellent 5 mega pixel camera. The phone also has Mp3 Player and document viewing software so you can open excel, powerpoint and word files.

I think it will sell fast!

  16. 16 Cole

Just phoned T-Mobile seeking an upgrade, and the lady said that they are not in until late december/new year….Will have to wait I guess…

  17. 17 G

Wait?? oh poo! oh well, Lucky I had to just get a replacement handset as mine broke, so it should be non-scratched for Ebay :-)

  18. 18 Alex

I just got off the phone with O2 and they said it’s out on 17th November. Only one week to wait…

  19. 19 Samsung G800

The Samsung G800 has been rolled out today to independent retailers on T-Mobile. (Not from the official site yet).

It has been launched Free on T-Mobile Flext 30 (18) @ £30 pcm.

    Hope this helps.

i jst gt of th fne frm vodafone nd they sed it wud b owt in 5 yrs or so, r they liein?

  21. 21 Samsung G800

Definitely, the company promoting the T-Mobile deals went into liquidation last week, but Vodafone now have the G800 in stock. 5yrs seems a bit excessive for any phone?

  22. 22 honey

i tink dis fone wil be sik i swear down im gettin it

  23. 23 BK

Awesome looking phone with a cmaera 2nd to none! Anyone know if the usual spec will apply to customisation of messgae tones (i.e. you can’t customise them!) on the G800?

  24. 24 DG

I’m with BK here. Would like to know if this has capability of customising sms alert (G600 doesn’t although you can customise ring tones).

I want this on O2 but not if it’s the pathetic Samsung dribble for alert tones.

  25. 25 hannah

    I want one othe

  26. 26 Anonymous

once a person gets his hand on samsung g 800 they will never need a camera s marchant.

  27. 27 DG

SMS alerts aren’t customiseable, see following review and search for “alerts”.

That has buggered this phone for me….. really pissed off now.

  28. 28 Anonymous

  29. 29 DG

    Depends where you are. .

O2 is best for me and Orange is crap round here but could be Orange and Voda are better for you.

does is take a memory card?

  31. 31 Terry

    Hello

I have set up a sort of questionnaire for anyone who has this phone. Please comment and help people like myself to decide whether i should get the phone:

    1) Is the battery life on the phone good?
    2) Is the memory good?
    3) Is the keypad soft or does it hurt your fingers when you text?
    4) Are the ringtones / messgae tones, that already come on the phone good?
    5) Is the music or ringtone volume loud?
    6) Do you find the phone bulky, big, slim, heavy, light … ?
    7) What’s the total mark out of 10 overall?
    8) What feature(s) besides the camera do you like best?
    9) Are therre any disadvantages to the phone?
    10) Do you recommed the phone? If not, please state why and which phone you prefer?

  34. 34 CGibson

Had my g800 for a few days now, got it on a upgrade with orange. bit bigger than my past phones but the camera is very good and now there;s no need to always carry both a phone and a camera.

  35. 35 sonia

    i’m f—ing getting one!!!!!!

  36. 36 jack

i think this phone is rubbish and a complete waste of money, infact it is an outrage that samsung think they can make a good phone.

  37. 37 jack

actually i have changed my mind, thi phone is amazing and everyone should have one, although it is a waste of money and you could just get a cheap phon

  38. 38 andy
