Garmin has released all-in-one software for GPS-enabled smartphones turning them into Garmin navigators.
Garmin Mobile XT comes on a microSD card (plus converters for miniSD and standard SD slots), and pairs with a smartphone’s internal GPS antenna. The software has been available for a short while, but that version was for non-GPS enabled devices and cost a lot more.
The new version comes with preloaded maps of either North America or Europe (30 countries) plus voice directions, points of interest, real-time traffic alerts and local fuel prices (US only). However, unlike Garmin’s normal products, Mobile XT doesn’t require any subscription charges.
A rather sweet feature of Garmin Mobile XT is that it’ll route the driver to the location of a contact in their phone’s address book or a calendar appointment. It also includes ‘PeerPoints’, enabling users to send their position to any other phone and navigate to the location of other Mobile XT users.
