Vyke has released a new version of its Vyke Pro software which includes an upgrade that allows users to send and receive free text messages to each other. Users will also be able to send messages to non Vyke Pro users for as little as 1p per message.
The really clever part is that a new wake-up function has been incorporated into the software meaning that when your phone detects that another Vyke Pro user is sending you a message, the software starts automatically (as opposed to being toggled on and off manually). This means that you can receive your message shortly after it has been sent without any delay much like a standard SMS message.
Considering a typical SMS message costs 12p (the equivalent of £750 per MB of data) this is certainly a pretty good deal and one that will no doubt continue to rile mobile networks. The planned upgrade to offer VoIP to handsets that have had the functionality intentionally removed by operators probably won’t win the company any friends in the mobile network industry either. Something tells us the customers won’t be quite so unhappy about the release (if it goes ahead unabated that is).
