Hackers crack iPhone firmware 1.1.1

iphoneReports are coming in via MacRumors, Boy Genius Report, TUAW and others that the recently released, hack-breaking iPhone firmware 1.1.1 (the software that runs the phone) has been cracked by the ‘iPhone Dev Team’ group.

The news should mean a return for the unofficial iPhone applications that have appeared over the last few months, all of which were disabled by Apple’s release of the 1.1.1 firmware update. For potential buyers of the UK iPhone who might be interested in installing apps such as the NES emulator on their handset, this is obviously good news.

However, the iPhone Dev Team apparently isn’t quite ready to publicly release its efforts, and also says that apps created for the old 1.0.2 firmware are likely to need some re-working before they’ll run on 1.1.1.
