AppleInsider reports that Apple is about to start a directory service listing the many ‘Web 2.0′ apps that are available online for its iPhone. Apple has been doing this for some time with applications and Dashboard widgets for its Mac OS, so in some ways it’s surprising it has take this long for it to start an iPhone app list too.
It’s easy to speculate, too, that this is in part a move by Apple to quiet on-going criticism of its ‘closed box’ approach to thirdparty iPhone application development. We think that unless Apple opens up iPhone to other developers it could prove to be the handset’s undoing — especially with increasing hype related to Google’s coming attack on the mobile world.
Frankly, Apple is limiting the potential of the iPhone. It needs to find a way to open up — as we’ve said before. MacRumors has just posted this piece, stating that some developments may well be on the way from Apple. Whether it’s a full SDK, a certification programme as we’ve argued for, or a half-way house improvement to the Web apps system remains to be seen.
