Water-powered phones due by 2010

Samsung water power.jpgThe mobile industry is always looking ahead to the next big thing, but how about this – water-powered mobile phones.

According to Korean newspaper The Chosun Ilbo, Samsung Electro-Mechanics has managed to develop a mobile phone battery that runs on H20. Yes, that’s right, plain old water. And according to Samsung, water-powered handsets could appear as early as 2010.

The micro-fuel cell and hydrogen generator batteries work through the reaction of metal and water in the phone to produce hydrogen gas. This is then supplied to the fuel cell, where it reacts with the oxygen in the air to produce battery power.

The micro-fuel cell can generate up to three watts of electricity – enough to power a mobile phone for up to 10 hours.

The first water-powered batteries might need the hydrogen cartridge changing, but Samsung said later versions might only need to be filled with water. So presumably, instead of plugging your phone into a socket to power it, you’ll just have to hold the battery under a tap?
