Apple officially anounces native third-party apps for iPhone and iPod Touch: developer SDK to ship in Feb

mn_macworld_caps1041.jpgThe wait is over, it is official, the iPhone and the iPod Touch will be getting third-party applications next year. Don’t believe us? Just ask Mr Jobs.

In an open letter that has just been posted on Apple’s Hot News page, Apple’s head honcho Jobs wrote:

Let me just say it: We want native third party applications on the iPhone, and we plan to have an SDK in developers’ hands in February.

Doesn’t get much more crystal clear than that. Looks like Apple wanted to finalize all of the iPhone carriers in all of the key territories before moving on with phase two. Of course, opening up the platform in such a way will necessitate a very robust set of protection tools to defend against viruses, malware and what have you.

This apparently is one of the chief reasons for the delay in making such a move. Interestingly, in the letter Jobs praises Nokia’s approach to protecting its latest devices by enforcing digital signatures for all third-party programs and insinuates that Apple plan to work with a similar system.

So there you have it, native third-party apps are going to happen and if you are a developer you only have to wait until February to get your hands on the necessary tools to get your idea out of the door. And what about the possibility for games? You’ll have to excuse us, we feel a bit faint.
