Orange is trialling mobile contactless ticketing services with Manchester City Football Club, allowing fans to use their mobiles to get through the turnstiles.
Further developments in the trials might let fans buy merchandise or refreshments at the ground, meaning they can leave their cash and credit cards at home on match days.
The trials are using Near Field Communications (NFC) – dubbed ‘mobile contactless’ - which enables Sim cards to be swiped at dedicated terminals or readers to make shopping easier and more convenient.
The trials will begin early next year when NFC-equipped handsets will be supplied to selected Man City season ticket holders, replacing their existing swipe cards. Mobile contactless has already been deployed in Japan with ‘intelligent billboards and retail tags letting users download information, place orders or buy tickets on their phones
Orange will use the Manchester City trial to gather customer feedback and analyse user behaviour to help plans to rollout mobile contactless across the country at a later date.
