Yeigo VoIP calling officially launched in Europe

yeigo_symbian_windows.jpgHandset-based low-cost routing services seem to be like buses. There are hardly any around, then loads turn up at once.

Yeigo first appeared back in June having been launched in South Africa, but now it’s European launch has been announced. Yeigo routes calls from your 3G/wifi mobile through Yeigo’s VoIP network to other Yeigo users free of charge, and offers up to 80% of other calls.

The news follows the recent launch of EQO, another downloadable service offering free and low-cost mobile calls but which doesn’t use only 3G or wifi but can work on GPRS phones as well.

Yeigo comes in two versions: the Symbian/Windows Mobile version lets users make free Yeigo calls and have IM chats with other people anywhere in the world; while the Java version – called Yeigo Lite – only lets users send SMS messages or chat on IM with Yeigo’s ConnectUs service.

It sounds great but Yeigo can’t quite match the options available with similar low-cost International calling services such as EQO. Unlike Yeigo, EQO isn’t VoIP-based so it works on far more handsets because it doesn’t necessarily need a 3G/wifi connection and again, calls between EQO users are also free.
