Nokia’s N81 now shipping but still only coming to Vodafone in the UK

N81Nokia has just confirmed that one of its most promising new handsets for 2007, the N81, is now shipping. Available in two flavours, one with a 2GB microSD card and the other with 8GB of built-in storage, the N81 is reported to have fine music playback performance, and comes with music-friendly features like a 3.5mm headphone socket.

However, due to the N81’s support for Nokia’s new Music Store initiative, the handset is being quietly boycotted by the majority of operators. Only Vodafone has decided to stock the N81 (in 8GB form, thankfully), and you can register for email updates about the phone over on Voda’s Coming Soon pages.

Off-contract you should expect to pay somewhere towards £300 for the standard N81 and £350 for the N81 8GB. Compared to £269 for an iPhone on-contract, that’s not such a bad deal — especially if you can couple the N81 up with a cashback contract like O2’s Eco Saver.
