Urban Attack blasts the competition while E.T. lives up to his past in this week’s mobile games round-up

capture_30102007_164105.jpgIt’s been a quieter week review wise over the last seven days over on our sister site Pocket Gamer.

The fantastically titled Crazy Penguin Catapult brightened Monday morning, proving to be as much fun as it sounds earning 7 out of 10 for its mix of strategy and quirky casual sections.

Questing into the fold, Rise of Lost Empires helped open the week with a chunky dose of rewarding RGP action. Feature packed and long enough to justify being described as epic, Rise of Lost Empires set the bar high with 8 out of 10.

Unfortunately it was followed by the build-em-up, The Settlers which despite its promising presentation suffered from squint worthy menus and mission structure issues leaving it with 5 out of 10.

Luckily Urban Attack followed soon after to show the rest of the crowd exactly how Java gaming should be done. Stunning visuals, a unique plot of intrigue, solid shooting gallery blasting action and plenty of variety earned it a 9 out of 10 that leaned closer to a 10 than a 9.

Going to the other extreme E.T. The Extra Terrestrial kept the reputation of its famed and awful forbearer (of the same name) that graced the Atari 2600 alive by being nearly irredeemably dreadful. Messy, unplayable and generally just frightfully poor in every way this mini-game fest’s 3 out of 10 score confirmed that the franchise is cursed on any gaming platform.

Disney Dogs fared much better by comparison but while it’s pet sim mechanic may prove to be a giggle for young uns its 6 out of 10 score indicated that it is a bit of a yawn for grown-ups.

The Weakest Link 2008 was anything but, bringing the winning format of the show to mobiles with flair and earning a strong 8 out of 10.

Last of all was another very playable title in the shape of Pop Superstar. Playing as a sort of pop star sim game but with doused throughout with a satirical wit, Pop Superstar ended the week on 8 out of 10.

Check back next week for the next mobile games round-up.
