O2 scraps fair usuage cap for iPhone unlimited data plans

071022_iPhone.jpgRemember when it transpired that O2’s planned unlimited data plan for the iPhone wasn’t actually unlimited at all being that it was capped at 200 megabits per month? Well it seems that O2 has decided that rather than become mired in a complicated battle of semantics with customers who don’t know what megabits are or what they equate to, the company will in fact lift the cap making the unlimited data limit actually unlimited.

Data caps are a pretty standard aspect of so called unlimited data plans, though usually they are cunningly disguised under the jargon ‘fair usage cap’ so it is refreshing to see a genuinely unlimited data plan arrive (and what better device to accompany it). There is the single caveat that any data accessed must be for personal, not commercial use and the phone must not be used as a modem.

So now that it does what it says on the tin all we have to do is look forward to the device’s release next Friday, not that we are counting the minutes or anything.

Unlimited data for the iphone, WOW! Can’t wait to get my hands on one on Friday evening. This makes the iphone/O2 package the most important development milestone in the entire history of mobile communications.

I was one of the first to get my hands on a mobile phone when they first hit the uk. In those days they were the size of a house brick. Since then the only real developments have been to reduce size, include texting and to improve coverage. Thats just natural evolution stuff but the launch of unlimited internet access and data transfer is like the switchover from black and white to colour.

    Bring it on Apple / O2 I can’t wait!

    Glyn, don’t gush too much!
It may well be unlimited but do you really want to browse for hours on end on an iPhone that has limited multimedia playback from the Net. “Unlimiting” is pretty much a no-loss for 02 as the phone can’t be used as a modem to suck the Web down for a rich PC-based experience.

I’d be more inclined to figure out how to get the iPhone from France so that I can use it on any network I please! THAT’s progress!

In the meantime I’m still more excited about the other manufacturers’ responses to the iPhone because they will be the real must-haves
