Sales of illegal mobile jamming devices are soaring in the US in what seems to be a backlash against people using mobiles in public.
US retailers are receiving hundreds of orders a month for handheld gadgets that can turn off mobile signals to handsets at the click of a button.
Mobile signal jammers are not new but now smaller versions the size of cigarette packets are available, sales are taking off. The new jammers cost as little as £75 and can cut off mobile phone signals in a 15-30 feet radius.
And this is despite the punishment in the US for being caught jamming mobile signals is a fine of up to $11,000 (around £5,000). They’re also illegal in the UK, but you can buy them in this country.
Sensing an opportunity, manufacturers are pressuring communications regulators to lift the ban on mobile jammers in certain circumstances, such as stopping inmates using contraband mobiles in prison.
Then again, the regulators probably realise most buyers want to buy jammers to simply stop people using their mobiles in public- people like cinema owners, or transport providers, or even disgruntled commuters.
