Nokia drops hints about S60 5th edition features

symbianAll About Symbian are running an interesting roundup of possible new features for Nokia phones running S60 5th edition, as (partly) revealed at last month’s Smartphone show.

Although light on technical detail it does look as though Nokia will bow to pressure and embrace touch screen technology in 2008 (the launch of the iPhone had absolutely nothing to do with this, of course).

Possibly more interesting is the Sensor Framework - this allows developers to access data from sensors embedded in an S60 phone. These could include light and proximity sensors and of course the accelerometer sensor, as seen in the best Symbian app ever.

Making these extra sensors a standard part of the S60 UI opens up many new ways of interacting with your phone - you could shake it to scroll through contacts, or have it go into silent mode when you drop it into the dark of your pocket, for example. Nokia promise that the new UI will be backwards-compatible with 3rd edition, so apps written for older phones should still work.

Oh, and if you were wondering why you never got the upgrade to S60 4th edition - there wasn’t one. The number four is considered unlucky in China, Japan and Korea as it sounds like the word for Death. So now you know.
