Channel Five’s The Gadget Show has reviewed Sony Ericsson’s latest smartphone on its WebTV site and the conclusion? It’s not as good as Apple’s iPhone or Nokia’s N95.
The reviewer, John Bentley, said he had hoped the P1i would be a good alternative to the other two now ubiquitous handsets but he was sadly disappointed.
He liked the camera and music player and that was about it. They keypad, web browser, Wi-Fi (Which he couldn’t get to work), design and the fact that SMS messages are set up for only 70 characters (You have to manually select 160 characters) all came in for criticism.
It’s a shame for Sony Ericsson but then I’m sure sales of its K800-series cameraphones and W-Series walkmans more than make up for it.

Don’t believe all you hear - there is no 70 character limit and no way to change it if there were one. His complaint about push email preventing desktop syncing with outlook is silly as the push client obviates the need for desktop syncing. And the iPhone has no push solution or over the air syncing of contacts etc. WiFi criticism is fair enough but I do wonder whether he tried more than 1 access point - my WiFi has worked faultlessly. Finally the keyboard - I think most people who have a P1 or M600 feel this is the phone’s strongest point - it far quicker to type on than (say) and e61i or Blackberry and will knock spot off the iPhones virtual keyboard. Opera vs Safari a no brainer - give me the iPhone every time - but against the s60 browser? Much closer call…
Dude when i got my first P1i I couldn’t get the wifi right too. Reformatted it, and I got it worked, must have figetted some confi to mess up the wifi.
70 character for sms, dun bull me man. it’s 160 by default.
The rocker QWERTY keyboard is definitely need some learning curve but unless you are retard or your have psychomotor skills lagging then the phone will be hard to use. I guess that old british hag has got senile syndrome or something.
The camera for P1i is far more superior than iphone as it is 3.2 mega and the colours and ISO is way much better than n95. Lense dun make camera do better and neither is the mega pix. Go ask a pro on photography and he will tell you it’s all about the contrast.
Nokia have been providing some crappy processing power for the camera. And if your compare thickness of that N95- it’s oh my god you can’t fit it into jeans when you are clubbing.
Lastly, P1i is the best of both world in terms of quality camera(3.2 is good enough unless you are taking some nude shots where you need to see the hairlines), Thickness (as long as it fits into a LEVI’s), Touchscreen (Oh you will understand the benefit someday NOKIA, users), and lastly this thing is so effectively multitasking in terms of apps on standby!!! Japs aren’t stupid in tech man. They ain’t koreans or china with laggy phones like LG and samsung. And to the FINS of NOKIA - Wake the hell up about your current new phones designs!. AS for apple- stick your phone to the american market cuz asians are moving so far ahead of you, that’s why you are hit by the home morgage fiasco!
I have to agree with paddy,
Im pretty sure TGS got hold of a early production/firmware or even prototype version because coz he has a few to many problems with it, i have a p1i and there is and never was any 70 character limit, infact the only legitimate complaint is the wi-fi, which works fine on most signals but is a bit picky with specific encryption settings (eg if you have your modem set to use ‘wpa/wpa2′ it wont connect, set it to use wpa2 only and it works fine - it also works fine with wep and when there is no encryption like in a cafe/train)
the Nokia has its own problems and is not a touch screen, and the iPhone is very slick but the camera is crap and its not 3G.
The p1i hand set is a little unusual in its keypad and general usability but you get used to it soon enough and then its just second nature.
The Opera browser that uiq3 use on the p1i is not as nice a safari on the iPhone but that will hopefully change once Opera produce a better browser…
As for the way it looks i really like it, looks a lot better that the cheap plastic look of the N95 thats for sure, i have received nothing but compliments on the looks front - has a retro look i think.
