The blog of UK mobile retailer Dial-a-Phone has a post claiming that LG’s Viewty is outselling the iPhone in Europe, after LG released figures saying it had sold 310,000 Viewtys since the handset went on sale five weeks ago.
To some extent, this is speculation, since Apple hasn’t released any sales figures for iPhone in the UK or Europe yet. Of course, its failure to do so has fuelled the rumours that the sales haven’t been great - something bolstered by the odd report that iPhone activations haven’t been quite as numerous as Apple and O2 were hoping in the UK.
Viewty’s success spells danger for Apple, because it’s seen as one of the iPhone’s most powerful rivals. From personal experience, I can testify that Viewty’s camera makes mincemeat of the iPhone’s, even if its touchscreen interface isn’t quite as intuitive. The battle between the two will be a defining mobile trend in 2008.

Is this for real? Did you just say that the battle between the iPhone and the LG Viewty will be a defining mobile trend in 2008? Wow. Here’s a trend for you: the iPhone will continue to steamroll through Europe and into Asia in 2008 and people will have forgotten all about the LG Viewty–those few who’ve even heard of the device today that is, and can say its horrendously silly name without giggling. That’s my brave prediction. Care to take that bet?
Well, either it is or it isn’t. A question mark on the headline means you don’t know. Quoting someone else who doesn’t know just means you don’t know and you’re too lazy to find out. Why don’t you just go with what you do know. You like the LG phone better than the iPhone and think everybody else should too. Then, if you wanted to write a real article, you could explain why. That would actually be worth reading.
Try as we might, Apple aren’t going to tell us how many iPhones have been sold or activated in the UK yet. They’ll only say when they have something to crow about.
What can’t denied is that LG’s 5-megapixel camphone and the iPhone are going to appeal to different people who want different things from their phone. Maybe more people want a high-end cameraphone that’s cheaper than Apple’s not particularly advanced mobile with innovative touch-screen controls…?
You are comparing a FREE piece of junk to a true, cutting edge smartphone? I wouldn’t OWN an LG ANYTHING unless it was free. Their quality is one notch above “Sharp”
heh the iPhone/Viewty debate continues.. one very close to my heart given I had my renewal coming up on my contract, and I was rather excited at the prospect of a brand new Viewty at the end of the month.
Awesome camera, silly video stuff.. looked great.
One day before renewal I played with an iPhone, fell in love with the multitouch interface, loved the seamless integration of all the apps.. It is SO much better put together software wise than the Viewty, which has silly menus, various glitches and flaws, and a crappier touchscreen.
Coupled with the awesome Safari browser, the lovely way SMS works, visual voicemail and a bunch of other excellent features.. I’m so so so glad I ended the contract with TMobile and got myself an O2 iPhone.
I can live without the camera, I have a camera anyway, I can live without video.. rarely used it on my N70.
For a data user, and someone who needs to be organised the iPhone is easily the choice over the Viewty, which is more the multimedia creation tool.
Both are good phones, but the iPhone is better where it counts on the things I need in a phone.. but it wouldn’t surprise me if the Viewty sold better.
The Viewty is free.
The iPhone is £269.
KIDS CAN BUY A PS3 FOR THAT. (I think?) The iPhone is definitely limited in its audience to people who have some cash to throw at gadgets.
I have a Viewty and an Ipod Touch.
The viewty is a totally fantastic camera phone and the Ipod touch has all the features of the iphone without the 35 a month contract.
Both are very good at what they do.
I would not want to be watching a movie on the iphone and getting a constant interruption of texts and phone calls.
The Viewty is a Beauty
How is the LG Viewty a rival to Apple’s iPhone? It doesn’t make sense. The iPhone is designed for people who want music from their phone, and the LG Viewty is for people who want to take pictures. Neither phone is good with both of these features, only one or the other. It’s simply an opinion depending on what you want from your mobile. However I think the iPhone is overpriced for what it is, seeing as its almost the same as an ipod touch but with a few extra features that make it a mobile, but it costs more than double. Whereas, the LG is a considerable price for a mobile of it’s standard.
